"Unobtainium" is the copyrighted (sp?) name for the sticky rubber that Oakley use on their sunglasses and handlebar grips!!! I wonder how they got around using that name?

Lol I noticed that too. In the theater I suggested that the evil corporation was Oakley. No one got it at that point. :p

I suppose it is but since it's been in my lexicon for so long I just accept it. Good observation,

I believe Robert Heinlein, wrote.. "there are no new stories, just old ones with serial numbers filed off and a new coat of paint"

How true that is. And, I think Solomon had something to say on the same matter...

And, without getting into the politics, I was a bit put off by some of the references. Strangely enough, I agreed with most of the themes, in fact I cannot think of one I disagreed with... But, I think that the whole thing was cast in a certain cultural light that I do not care for. And, I dread the standard sort of response I know will come out of it.

But, it was a really cool movie.

Did not care for the 3D, probably because I have really high visual acuity, and I could see the distortion the lenses of the cheap glasses were causing.

I definitely want to see it again, in normal format. I don't just watch the action of a movie, my eyes tend to roam the screen, seeking all the details, the context of the scenes. So, the cheap glasses and the 3D did not help with that.

I loved the 3D nature of the plot, with the battles happening from the ground up to the floating mountains. With the world stretching down from the trees, from the waterfalls, up to the floating mountains. I loved the way the world and grandeur of it was a plot element.

I loved the little fight between the small fighter and the big ship. Very cool iteration of the type.

I loved the mechs. I cannot wait until we have a blockbuster that just does mechs, or has a really strong mech plot-line.

I did like civil disobedience.

I liked the dinosaurs.

Not so much for the gaia, but once I got past that, I liked the way they imagined it.

In no particular order...

They're are named after greek gods...elementals if you will

Titanium is named after the Titans (the old gods) (Jupiter's moon is also called Titan)

Plutonium named after the God 'Pluto'- of the underworld (and the Disney character :) )..and to a lesser degree the planet

Helium, named after Helios the guy with the chariot up in the sun (he was also called Titan though)

Selenium named after Selene, the Godess of the moon

Uranium named after Uranus...or mine :)

Mercury.. named after...'ahem'..Mercury!

Free Diver's post is exactly why I will be waiting to watch this film on DVD! (nice post dude!)

Haha I'm glad you enjoyed it. I didn't write that, however. My brother saw it on another forum.

I saw the movie in 3d and I'm a bit disappointed. It's a great visual experience and it's an OK storyline. Still, I felt everything was 'too sacred', too serious. I think the movie lacked any real 'kick butt' action (for example, Star Wars introduced us to light saber battles that stood out from the spectacle of the space dog fights and such) and I would have like a really good joke or two. One bonus of this movie was that because of the 3d and the glasses, everyone was actually watching and not talking all through the movie.

Read in the paper the other day that Avatar passed one BILLION dollars in receipts on its 17th day. I may have to see this on the big screen; usually I wait to pick up the DVD for $3 at a local pawn shop.

FWIW, it's not the first movie to use unobtanium. Ever see The Core?

No, I must have missed that one. Still, it's a great material. I bet it would make one heck of a blade!

Yeah, I remember that. Now that you reminded me, I recall having wondered about the Oakley connection and the use of Unobtanium in that movie, as well.

I would have minded the use of that term much, much less if Cameron had bothered to come up with some sort of back story regarding its use. But then, I didn't go for the plot. I went for the graphics (and let's be honest, the nearly naked Na'vi women :D )

Freediver's post is exactly why you should not see it on DVD. Yes the story is nothing new, but the seeing the visual effects on a large scale in 3D is what the movie is about, and it's not going to come across on a small screen in your living room.

Don't think so.
If I drop a knife, I'd like to pick it up again.
Not waving it bye, bye, like a kid's balloon.

Besides, it's way to soft.

I heard that this movie is going to be the first blu-ray dvd to be released in 3D. Should be interesting to see.

Sure, as elemental, but imagine it alloyed with Neverseenium and Gotagetmesomium... Doesn't float away, can cut electrons off atoms and never EVER needs sharpening...
