A new way to employ the cricket
To : ALL
I read a post some time ago on the "other"
Spyderco forum about an article with a mention about Fred Perrin ( designer of the Perrin bowie & former French Army commando)
& how he employs the cricket for self defense: you take the open cricket, clutch it
between your index & middle finger(s) & make a fist, with the blade protruding, you strike
with it like a raptor claw! I now have greater respect for the diminuative cricket &
Mr. Perrin ( wouldn't want to meet him in a dark alley! )
ATE

ATE,
Fred Perrin is one of those individuals that you don't want to meet in a well lit crowd (if you're on his bad side).
The Cricket and Dragonfly can be put to some amazing uses if the need calls (and training never hurts, .... you that is).
"Ne vyklykaj vowka z leesoo, ..... bo tsej vowk maje ." Don't call the wolf out of the forest, because this one carries a .

Ate-
If you strike someone with a criket with it clutched between the 2nd and 3rd digit and strike with it like a raptor claw, wouldnt that be a bad idea. I see 2 things happening, one the user loses the blade or causes possible injury to themselves. The cricket is a handy tool for selve defense but wouldnt you want to hold it in a fashion were you wouldnt be likely to lose it. The average person doesnt have the grip strength the hold a cricket in that way and strike with it. Have you yet to try this? Though anything is better then nothing with a SD situation but I would be more willing use a method were I would feel that the blade was more secure in my hands. Please respond with your rebuttal I would be interested in your thoughts.
Repectfully

45R,
Hope you don't mind but I wanted to respond to your comments as well.
After your comments I thought I would test the grip ATE described. I think I see what you mean. When you hit the target the pressure on the blade does push against and then in turn pushes the handle against what feels like a weak grip (just being squeezed between two fingers).
First contact with the target sent the blade spinning out of my hand. So my scenario resulted in me taking a swipe at an (presumably) already threatening person and making them angrier and disarming myself. (I've been in better places)
I changed the grip a bit and found I could still have the blade between my first and second fingers but with the handle canted down and held by my second and third fingers. Held this way contact with the target didn't cause the Cricket to visit the other side of the room but I didn't think it was all that comfortable. I think with practice you might find a good way to hold the Cricket and employee it like a raptor, but it does seem like more effort then reward.
That shouldn't diminish ATE's statement about "greater respect for the diminuative cricket". With good training the small can still be put to amazing uses, again should the need arise.
You are how ever correct, the "raptor" grip doesn't seem that great.

Zabrewolf-
I hope that you didnt injure yourself trying this. The cricket is a great little tool for self defense, but I personally feel that it is better used in an element of surprise, its small enough to hold in your hands and extremely deadly when the user knows his/her anatomy. The little knife makes a great tendon and artery slicer but it still puts me a little 2 close to the BG. I would be curious what was said or posted in the other spyderco forum that ATE was refering to, and in what context did Perrin use the cricket for SD. I just didnt want spyderholics losing fingers or worst off, there lives trying out this method. If you want a knive for self defense buy one with the intention to use it for self defense.
Respectfully,
45R
PS the PE Cricket is one of my favorite little blades.

I am holding the Ladybug the same way. I think the Ladybug is more suitable for puncturing than the Cricket (which is a great little knife too), due to its tip.
Anyhow, you can do the trick with virtually everything (the keys, or a pen for eg.) that has something like a tip. I used to have an old acquaintance which messes a lot with martial arts (quite a living legend in his city) and he showed me how can a man be killed using the straw from your glass with juice, or even a sheet of paper!

Hmmmm, I'd rather the Lum Tanto (big fan of the style). But I won't say no to a Military (that is why I have one), or a Rescue (have two of those), or quite frankly what ever is on hand should the need arise. The Cricket, Ladybug, keys, pens, chairs, straws, ....... etc can work, but they are not near the top of my list of tools for defense.
45R,
Thanks for your concern of my test results. Still at 2-10-11 (eyes, fingers, toes).

Nope, the Spydie "sub-compacts" do not make very good duelling knives, but a Cricket/Jester/Dragonfly are excellent knives to cut yourself out of chokeholds, strangulations, other types of holds. Ofcourse, only assuming that the situation in question directly puts your life in danger. Train smart, be safe, test everything!

I know those of us that give advise would also like to pass on the wisdom of when to use that advise. I'm sure that is why we use phrases like "should the need arise" or "only if it puts your life in danger". I use the same phrases for the same reasons (pass on wisdom and try NOT to encourage some twitchy person to do something stupid). Enough preface, this is an irony comment.
How often do "chokeholds, strangulations," or "other types of holds" not "directly put your life in danger"? (training aside)
Mr Blonde
That is a real good "emergency" (see the lawyers have me too) use for the "sub-compacts" (like that phrase).

PS. Shouldn't this be on the MBC list? And didn't ATE start this? Why no more comments from him?

Lost all his finger and now uses a helper monkey to type and compose his posts, expect a more intelligent discussion from now on. :D Seriously I wouldn’t even use the Cricket as backup.

Something else to think about. Should you ever have to defend yourself against an attacker with a knife. The police will probaby not say too much if your carrying a smaller knife like a Cricket or a Navigator as they would to say a Police, Endura, Civilian or Military. The legal system in this county is a little weird now since 9/11. Although one may feel justified fendind off such an attack, you may still find yourself on the wrong side of the law carrying a larger blade. Be very careful. If possible, try to avoid any conflict.

I think ATE's computer took a dump. Besides if anyone tries to use a knife against me they would be "taking a knife to a gun fight."
