I'd Like to See ...
... a light weight Large Persian. I have a Large Persian and its like carrying a Buck 110 in my pocket. I love the size and blade shape but can't stand the weight.
How about a Large Persian with CF scales, light weight liners, no bolsters, and a VG10 Blade? Frankly, I'd take an FRN Large Persian, but I thought the CF would dress it up a bit.
That would make me very happy.

I'd have no interest in such a knife, but that's just me. To me, the bolsters are a MAJOR part of what makes the Persian "The Persian". Without them, it devolves into a "Chinook III Jr" and becomes just one more of brick in Spyderco's wall of oh so tediously uber-practial, butt ugly, yet ergonomic "tractors" rather than the almost "anti-Spyder" combination of brawn, egronomics, and beauty that it was.
Edited to add: For the record, my Buck 110 weighs 216 grams while, at 140 grams, a C83 Persian with the clip removed weighs a bit less than 2/3 as much on the same scale.

I would just like to own a full sized Persian. While I always have a thought or two about improvements that could be made to certain models the only thing I would like to see on the Persian is a left handed carry option. That's a knife that's just perfect the way it is IMO.

That would work, as long as they could do the bolsters smooth, like those on the original, rather than screwing them on and leaving screw heads visible. Bolsters with screws showing look like an afterthought.LorenzoL wrote:What about a large Persian with titanium liners and bolsters and CF scales?

Very expensive. Probably double the cost of the past persian.LorenzoL wrote:What about a large Persian with titanium liners and bolsters and CF scales?
The Yen is not worth more than the dollar by a good 15%.
We're working on a Persian sprint. Trying to come up with handle material for the scales, to go with the bolsters.

Thank you very much Sal and the rest of the spydercrew working on this.
Is this going to be a sprint of the large or small Persian though?

Despite my complaints, I'd probably buy that too.sal wrote:Very expensive. Probably double the cost of the past persian.

I guess my intitial suggestion was more of an expression of interest in the large persian blade in a light weight package. Not necessarily a "Persian" as they are known and loved. The Deacon wrote:To me, the bolsters are a MAJOR part of what makes the Persian "The Persian". Horn tip of course! Light and classy. Here was my photoshop assembly illustrating this (the handle was taken from a classic Italian knife, and somehow its sinuous form seems to work well with the blade, I also photoshopped the backlock button):Trying to come up with handle material for the scales, to go with the bolsters.

Good idea or stupid idea?
Thank you very much Sal :D :psal wrote:We'll try to make it light. We'll "holey" up the liners.

This makes me very happy to hear this news that it has progressed to the next phase.
Might I suggest once again that we do not go for a FRN lightweight treatment as it would totally ruin Ed's aesthetics and concept. For what it's worth I think a simple replacement of scales from black micarta to say Cocobolo, Snakewood, Amboyna, or even  spalted maple  LOL

I for one would expect pundits here to go for the Persian sprint with much eagerness. Personally I think most here would expect me to go for say 2, or 3, or 10 :p
Can't wait to hear or see prototypes Sal. Oh yeah and of course if you need a guinea pig I will volunteer my services freely and the Persians in my home will also be glad to see new brethren.
As for sprint run numbers I am uncertain if this would go more than 600 units? Maybe a limited run to gauge demand, then 1200 max?
Cheers

First of all I fully agree with my colleagues.ozspyder wrote:Might I suggest once again that we do not go for a FRN lightweight treatment as it would totally ruin Ed's aesthetics and concept....
Apart from beeing "soulless" FRN I think costs for a new mold make a FRN Persian unlikely but not impossible.
I don't want to hijack this thread, but in my eyes Barong and Khukuri from Ed Shempp in foliage green G-10 are a borderline case ... I know, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and I am only one of many customers (well, maybe I have more Spydies than the average customer :D ). I associate Ed Shempp design for Spyderco with bolsters and classy handle material.
Last but not least: Sal, if your SprintRun is in my expectations, you already sold one.
