Nah, just sleep deprivation. After working all night my sense of humor goes kinda sidways. :D I spent 20 min looking for the gaudiest electric casino carpet, old lady moo-moo print, flashy prints that might only be seen on Jeff Dunham's "SaWeeet Daddy Dee!" or Huggy Bear-ish sorts of pimps. If I could have put those little fabric dingle-balls on it, I would've :P

Thanks guys for the wrist-wrap tips. I did track down some thigh wraps allready.

How about a cut resistant kevlar/dynema/etc. wristbands or short sleeeves, to use in a "real" enviroment, like on the doors? Are there any? I know there's some long sleeves, that are used in meat cutting industries, but is there something like "normal" looking wrist bands, that are protected?

LOL probably. Unless I hear otherwise from Mr. Janich or site admins, for the sake of this thread I'll start putting them elsewhere on the forum, ie the photos section.

Sorry I missed your question and for the delayed response.

Back when I first started teaching MBC under Spyderco's sponsorship, I had a professional meat cutter come through the class. During the lunch break, we had a great conversation about the protective gear used in the meat industry and a week later he sent me a catalog for such gear. I went on a little shopping spree, buying Kevlar sleeves, stainless steel and Kevlar sleeves, gloves, and plastic arm guards. I then put them on a foam-covered dowel that represented a forearm and did some live-blade cutting.

The results:

Kevlar doesn't do anything to stop a sharp knife. Other tests I've done on "cut-resistant" Kevlar gloves proved the same thing.
Hard plastic, while very effective, is just too awkward--even for use in training.
The sleeves made of stainless steel wire and Kevlar actually provided the best combination of protection and flexibility. They are full-arm sleeves that slide over a shirt and secure with a clip at the shoulder. They are too itchy and uncomfortable to wear against exposed skin and too thin for training use, but they actually work very well against cuts and keep the blade from cutting through to the underlying limb. Sewn into the sleeves of a jacket, I think they'd work well.

I have also seen some custom vambraces made from leather, including some that have spring steel strips sewn into them. Smaller decorative vambraces are pretty common and readily available (check out leatherworkers at Rennaissance fairs). My friend Jerry Van Cook uses silver vambraces that look like traditional Native American jewelry. Even heavy leather watchbands can provide some protection.

I hope this helps.

Stay safe,

Mike

I have officially sold the patent rights to the Jani-Song design to Spyderco. Among my tasks is th refinement of the design to improve its ergos, reduce its overall weight, and increase its lock strength. It is "in the queue" as far as projects are concerned, but as a newcomer, it is behind a lot of other very cool product designs. As the most innovative knife company in the industry, Spyderco always has a lot going on. As cool as the Jani-Song is, it has a lot of "competition" in the Spyderco product development line.

Stay safe,

Mike

Mr. Janich,
A while back you mentioned that the MBC video was being updated with solo training info. Any hints as to when we might be seeing that at Stay Safe Media? Thanks much!

Dear Sarguy:

The editing on the update is in the final stages. Since the revised intro provides some history of the evolution of MBC--including the first Spyderco "era" from 1999-2004--we thought it might be cool to cut in some stills and footage shot at that time. Digging that out of my archives and getting it digitized for editing took a little time, but we should now be good to go.

I will see Mike Rigg, my partner in Stay Safe and editor of the project, tonight for our weekly training session. I'll rattle his cage and get an update...

Stay safe,

Mike

Way cool! I'm sure the additional "history and culture" content will be worth the wait. Thanks again.

I dunno if there's a famous root to it, but the phrase "stay safe" can be attributed to wishing that someone stays alive to see their family at the end of the day. I believe the name of the company that Mr. Janich's video are sold thru, Stay Safe Media, might be aimed at describing what the items that are produced and sold there aim to educate the end user towards, i.e. "staying safe".

I might add that it does not always mean "never do anything dangerous", but rather, "don't do anything stupid, be aware, prepared, and ready to fight for one's life". At least, to me that's what it means.

I started signing my e-mails and letters that way about 8-10 years ago. I was tired of the traditional signatures and wanted something relevant to personal defense and safety. When Mike Rigg and I partnered together, he thought it would be a great company name as well.

I can't say that I see the phrase "everywhere" now, but Mike Bane--host of The Best Defense and Shooting Gallery has "borrowed" it.

There's no mystical story there; just a way of saying goodbye that reminds folks to be aware and safe.

I started doing training courses in the 1990s at various academies in the Northeast and it was a common "greeting" at the end of meetings/classes/etc. then.
