Millie review

#1

Post by vampyrewolf »

Running a couple days late on a review on my LH... also noticed I never did a review on either of my right handed ones. So we're doing one for both :p

ergo's 9/10
my hands are big enough and my fingers long enough that I actually use the full handle. I do notice the front edge of the choil as well as the lock cutout. My middle finger ends up hitting on the lock cutout, and my index rubs on the squared front of the choil.
The jimping on the new one is annoying to run your hand past to get into the pocket. G-10 handle is rougher, and will probably kill a pocket faster, but doesn't affect draw that much.

lock 9/10
some days the lock is harder to close, but there has never been a concern about durability or closing force. I've carried a military for 7 years. I have stabbed my leg with the tip, when it caught on my jeans and opened slightly... but it's never closed on me.

edge/tip control 10/10
I've used my millie to cut and open far too much over the years. Short learning curve to get used to 4" of steel, but I have yet to cut my fingers with a millie. I do miss the old 440v though compared to the current s30v.

cutting ability 9/10
not exactly a knife made for delicate work, it takes some practice. However it'll take any heavy work you throw at the knife. A larger coil would let you switch grips to choke up better.

Overall 37/40, 92.5. Minor gripes about comfort and closing force on the lock, obviously hasn't stopped me from carrying a millie for 7 years or buying 3 of em so far (just waiting for the Ti now).

On another note, had some issues at work (me vs the smokers) that had a concern placed with HR about my knives a couple months ago (again). I only get to carry 1 pocket knife at work, and it's been the LH millie the last week (with the RH being put in my pocket at 4pm the second my shift is done). Haven't used it on food at work, but have a few times at home. Works great opening boxes and cutting tape though.
if the smokers hadn't made such an issue I'd be using my micarta dyad jr at work :p

Why do people worry more if you argue with your voices than if you just talk with them? What about if you lose those arguements?
Slowly going crazy at work... they found a way to make the voices work too.

So much for having great colleagues then... I think it's kinda sad that apparently 'the smokers' aren't man enough to just confront you personally with the issues they have with your knives. What kind of work do you do actually? I can imagine people would find a Millie a tad big for use in an office-environment :p Never had any issues about my Spydies though (then again, the largest knife I carry to work is my Sage ;) )

Thanks for the review!

Thanks for the review

I find it a great kitchen knife, as well as for the garden, hill and woods. Top allrounder with a thousand grips on offer

I like the view often stated that rather than it being too big, everything else suddenly seems too small :D :D

I'll bet it wasn't ALL the smokers went to talk to HR though. I'll bet you money it wasn't all of them :)

one of the smokers asked me (the day after I complained to HR) why I carry knives. Next day my boss pulled me aside to let me know that a concern was raised (not a complaint, a concern). Unfortunately the group of smokers I have to walk through to go between buildings has a few of the higher up's in it... so the building maintenance/security head found out about it.

With over 1000 employees, I'd guess 50 of us carry either a knife or multitool not provided by the company (olfa, REAL safe :rolleyes :) . On the other hand I'd guess we have 150-200 smokers. But until it becomes company wide policy, it was discrimination (when I dropped that bomb was when the maintenance/security guy got in). I've sharpened knives for a couple dozen already and was willing to bring a lawyer in if they told me "no knives" without making it company wide.

I'm in the QA dept of a major telecomm OEM, about to have my title changed to Reliability Technician as we hire 2 more analysts. Means I'll be constantly testing 10-12 products looking for out of box performance and failures. Opening boxes, cutting tape, mounting new units in chassis, and even trying to break them before they get out of the boxes to begin with.

Usually I was using my cricket or spin on boxes, clipped to right/rear, but once in a while I'd just grab what I had in the front pockets (millie or frn endura). The comments I got were usually when they didn't see the knife at all.

If they hadn't made such a big issue and limited me to one knife, I'd be using my dyad jr. I'm firing both millies to Craig in January to get an IWB/rear, dual military rig made. Then I'll use my dyad at work again  :o

Everything already seems small when you have long fingers to wrap around the handle. I can touch both sides of a standard keyboard (num pad on the side) with my thumbs touching in the middle. Anything shy of about 3" just disappears in my hands. Thats part of the fun of using a ss 'fly or cricket... no-one sees those 2" blades other than when I'm closing them and moving my fingers clear.
Didn't have to be all the smokers, just the dozen or so that I complained about (yep, my complaint to HR included some of the higher up's  :p ) Everything I do (besides my net traffic) is within company policy, so I wasn't worried about how far they'd go to get back.
I'm just waiting till I'm officially done my probation (now another 3 months for the position upgrade), then I call sask health. Might get em nailed 10k/smoker for the first offense if they realize this issue has been ongoing for a while.

What's so hard about that...

Oh, I keep forgetting that my hands are actually large.
I know too many people with XXXL mega size hands, it skews your perception of things.
Dang it, Sal really needs to make a 4.5" folder.

Its called the Police 3 SE and its pretty awesome. Yes its 4 3/8" but its my favorite large folder. I do think there is a need for a 4.5" leaf shape folder with comp-lock. At least in my collection

I've had my ss police for a little over 5 years, I don't push it though. I'm too concerned with breaking the tip with that swedge on it.

Weird I live in Saskatchewan(Prince Albert) and carry a Millie as my EDC and even own a SS Police (fully serrated) I find the millies tip seems more breakable than my police.
I think the poster who brought up the Police meant the new one the P3 not the original though. The Millie seems very much like an updated Police. Identical size but the Millie has the more modern full height flat grind ,nested liner lock ,G10 handle and more modern S30V VS VG10 ,backlock ,SS handles and a sabre grind. The P3 is like an even bigger Millie.

My 2 carry EDC's are my Millie 90% of the time and my Mule M4 in a OST neck sheath for when I can't wear the Millie on a pocket. I did have a ZDP Caly3 I loved but the Millie is just so useful with that extra long blade. It even works great in the kitchen. My girlfriend has crap knives in her house so I use my millie when I cook over there.

retaliation

Nice review on the Millie.

Hopefully those scum of the earth smokers won't show you a new way to carry your pocket knife because of your arrogant self righteous attitude about their personal habits. Have you ever stopped to consider that the retaliation may have been caused by your holier than thou attitude about them? Be careful what you wish for, an argument could be made that it is more of a menace to society to allow people to walk around with knives than to have people polluting the air that you breath.

whitefeather: just what are the smoking laws down there? Here it's 10meters from a door in a designated area.

the smokers are gonna be woken up to the law though, rudely. Sask health is rather concerned with enforcing it Not only are they not in the designated area, they're snubbing canadian law. Guess who'll getting a call when I get back from holidays? It depends on the number of offenses on the first visit as to if they get fines or simply a written warning.
