After getting tired of going through a backpack in about 6 months (if I'm lucky), I started looking a couple months for a better bag. Ended up finding ones that were either way bigger or a bit smaller than I need for my daily pile of gear, or would have to last at least 3-4 years to make the cost worth it. Pretty surprising when my main case I throw in is only slightly larger than a binder.
Stopped into the army surplus shop today, picked up what they sell as a "US Alice Pack", and other than needing something smaller for organizing the loose bits that usually end up in the front of my bags I've got everything in with room to spare.
What do you guys throw your daily gear around in?

My daily gear and school books ride in a Camelbak Demon. It may or may not have the well hidden hardside comparment for a chunk of polymer and metal that may or may not have the ability to use a series of levers and springs to incur a gas producing chemical reaction, propelling (or not) a chunk of lead down a metal cylinder. WHether or not such a thing exists, the bag has seen daily use for over two years now and it's holding up marvelously. I only wish that there was an internal section for a MOLLE panel. For someone looking for EDC bags that don't scream "Tacti-cool", the Demon is what I recommend. I got mine for somewhere around 70 dollars.

Northface Surge Backpack. I don't carry much, any given day its just a few notebooks, pens/pencils, and a SIGG water bottle for when I go to class, my laptop occasionally goes as well.

Dont get any better than this. Im a pack junkie, Have had tons of packs and bags. This is it! Solid, comfortable, can take anything I throw at it. Mine goes everywhere, probably gonna get a second soon.

my main backpack is still the vulture II.
i use a patagonia half mass bag at work, and on smaller hikes.
have a maxpedition medical pouch thingy (M1? M2?) that i keep tools and other essentials in, all organized, and ready to rock... i just throw that into whichever bag i'm using that day.
if you're burning through backpacks that quickly, and want something extremely bombproof, maybe have reload bags build you a bag... http://www.reloadbags.com

In my studio, I have tons of bags for what ever the project calls for. For business I use Tamrac and Domke bags. I also have a ton of Pelican cases I bought when the local camera store closed.
I have several Tamrac, Lightware, and Anvil cases. Anvil Cases, are flight cases, and all I do is stick an air bill on them, and they go to our project.
For my personal EDC, I use two Billingham camera bags.
They have never held my camera equipment, only EDC things. They are the least tactical looking bags you can buy.
Billingham bags are made in England, by hand I believe, and are beautiful - first rate quality. Mine are tan.

If you want something nice and unique, look up Billingham.

I use a Timbuk 2 back-pack made in good ole USA for books/laptop. (Though they've since outsourced all but their custom messenger bags--messenger type bags give me a neck/shoulder/backache.) For travel I use a Tough Traveler convertible back-pack--hand carry or back straps that disappear as needed--also made in US. I hate wheelies. I have a maxpedition shoulder bag for short hikes. Not my favorite bag but it does have a pair of water bottle holders, molle webbing all over the place, and convenient and well thought out pockets.
I like maxpedition. I use a Kodiak at the moment.
If the thought of something makes me giggle for longer than 15 seconds, I am to assume that I am not allowed to do it.

I don't carry an EDC pack, but as a general use back pack I really like north face. They will not attract attention because they are not 'tactical', but they are quite durable. After going through a bag a year, I bought a Jester which I used as my school backpack for about 4 or 5 years and as a work bag on a farm for a summer, and it's still holding up fine.
I finally replaced it with a big shot though because I needed something with more space, and I've been using it for school and travel for 3 months with no problems so far. I have a few slight issues with the design but for $80 I am very happy with it. Definitely a brand to consider if you don't want or need that tactical look or lots of MOLLE attachment points.
