Rookie G10

What angle must i use to sharpen the Rookie with the sharpmaker?
It does not wand to get sharp, after using the brown rots is feels ok, but after the white ones it feels dull. And does not make a nice cut on papier.
The Rookie is new and never used.
What is the best way to get it sharp.

First, you will have to make sure you are really sharpening the very edge. Get a sharpie ("Edding" in Europe), and paint your edge black. After 2 strokes on the SM, you will see if you are actually hitting the edge or only the shoulder. This is known as the "magic marker trick", and maybe this thread will help you a little.

That said, you SHOULD be fine with the 40° setting. 90% of all Spydies should have less than 20° on each side, so you would really sharpen the edge and not rebevel the knife with that setting.

If you are still in the early stage of getting used to the sharpmaker: relax!

Do it slowly, keep the blade really upright and do not apply too much pressure, and you WILL get a sharp edge eventually. The Edding trick is priceless, though. This and following the instructions on the DVD that came with the sharpmaker will lead to a pretty sharp edge, promised.

Using very little pressure on the fine stones and making sure to keep as consistent as I can made a big difference for me. And gradually use less and less pressure until you're not even applying the entire weight of the blade on the fine stones. In the last couple strokes, I'm barely contacting the stones.

I'm also using a hand-held microscope to check the edge. A 10x jeweler's loupe is ok but not fine enough for me.

Search for
Carson Micromax LED 60X-100X LED Lighted Pocket Microscope

It works well for me and for that price, I got an extra one in case the first one dies.

Hah, I keep forgetting to do the sharpie trick! I have a Rookie that out of the box would not go through paper easily like my other Spydies. Sharpmaker'd it several time and not any better. I am doing it with blade straight up and down and not much pressure - got that mastered, but Rookie wouldnt cooperate. Gave up. I mean it was sharp, but I had to kinda saw through paper. Couldnt be the Rookie. Gotta do the sharpie trick!! That has to be it. :D

JoeK? Pic bump? Im sure your daughter will be thrilled to help you out on a Saturday. :D Reason being, I know my bevels are off per my earlier post and I need to re-do them. If I screw it up  , I want to know what the FFG looks like as my back up.

That helps a ton! :D Thanks man. Looks great. I thought the blade style wouldnt bug me, but given that its not that sharp and the bevels are off, I might just get it Kreined. Probably will experiment on trying to even the bevels first to get some experience.

There is a fine gent in Europe who does a fine regrind service as well. The name Shultz comes to mind, but I'm not positive. If I can find a name, I'll edit my post.

When using the white rods, especially with VG-10, be sure to use only light pressure. You just want to polish the edge using the white stones, not cut more steel, which is what the brown stones are for.
