Caly 3 or Delica?
Caly 3 or Delica?
Hey guys! Been a while since I've posted on here.
Well I started a new job doing HVAC work at a VA hospital and they are pretty serious about their "no weapons" policy. Unfortunately that means I can't carry any of my Spydercos because they all exceed the 3" limit on blade length. (Apparently in their minds if a blade is 3" or shorter it can't be used as a weapon  )
So, I'm planning on getting a waved Delica in PE or SE to take the place of my waved Endura, and I was going to get a regular Delica in SE to take the place of my SE Endura in ZDP.
This is where I ran into problems though, I started thinking haha. I have heard so many great things about the Caly 3 that I'm wondering if I should try it instead of the regular Delica.
It fits the size bill, but its not SE like I would prefer for a work knife. So basically I'm asking:
Can the Caly stand up to some mild work use?
Is the Caly worth the extra $$ over the Delica?
Thanks for the help!

I cant give you the depth of advice others will in their responses, but Im a big fan of the Caly 3. The one thing that is a nice difference is the choil that the Caly 3 has and the Delica does not. For your hard working use, the choil will give you a better 'control' grip than the Delica, so that is nice. Also, if you want ZDP, there are a couple site selling the CF/ZDP model for only about $10 or so more than the regulag VG-10/G10 Caly 3 (Cutlery Shoppe?).
Good luck.
Good luck.

The Caly3 WAS actually built in SE IIRC. Discontinued I think, but not too long ago and maybe still available in some places.
The deep pocket carry will probably come in handy in this knife-o-phobic environment.
Is it capable of mild work use? You bet.
It it worth the extra $$$? **** yeah, it is a totally different animal than a Delica. As good as the D4/E4 pattern is, the Caly plays in a different league. As long as you don't want your knife to be full screw construction, you can't go wrong with the Caly.

jugg2 wrote:Wow, well it seems like a pretty strong vote for the Caly already! I'll probably place the order tomorrow sometime. Probably will pick it up in VG-10 even though I found it in ZDP for only $10 more like Pneumothorax mentioned.
pay the 10 bucks extra for the CF ZDP its worth it, unless you really want serrations which i would understand, wish the ZDP came in SE
I have a G10 Delica (and have had others), a SE Galy3 in G10 (disc'd) and a CF/ZDP Caly 3.
Definetely, my favorite of the three is the SE/G10 Caly. Go for it, you won't regret it.
A SE Delica, although a great cutter by any standards, is no match for a fully serrated FLAT GROUND blade, like the Caly. Even discontinued, these shoudn't be too hard to find, and are less expensive than the PE CF/ZDP.

Caly 3 for sure ! The Delica is a good workhorse knife but as already mentioned the Caly 3 is in a class above. IMHO one of the best folder designs ever conceived !
Get (at least) one.... any one, either the G10/VG10 or the CF/ ZDP189 version. You will find that it does everything you need and more :D

Definitely get the Caly III, as mentioned, it is a superb knife. I have the CF and the G-10 (PE & SE) and I find I use the G10 a lot more, I seem to be able to get it much sharper than I can get the ZDP-189 steel. Knifecenter appear to still have SEs in stock.
Good luck with the knife AND the new job!

IMHO Caly3 is one of the best production folder ever made. Worth every penny you spend. Regarding durability and use, IIRC one of the forum members rebuild his house, using Caly3.

Another vote for the Caly3!
In my opinion the Caly3 is one of the nicest 3" folders out there period. Silky smooth opening, satisfying click as it locks, great jimping, choil, super slicer FFG blade, BLACK G10 handles, low ride wire clip.
There was a thread a few days ago where someone was commenting on blade play, but I have never noticed any blade play in any Caly3s myself. They have all locked up nice and tight.
As was mentioned by someone else the low ride wire clip is another plus when being carried around sheeple as the thing just disappears in your pocket and the Delica sticks up a fair amount.
I'm a G10 man myself, carbon fiber handles are lost on me but plenty of people seem to like the ZDP model.
One word of warning on the Caly3... if you do adjust the pivot be aware it's an allen head screw, not a torx and be sure to use a good quality allen driver as the top of the pivot will deform easily. A friend of mine has one that's pretty gouged up. .

To throw more stuff into consideration you might look at the CF Native and Sage 1/2.
The Caly3 and Delica (especially G10) are awesome knives from personal experience. I have the CF Caly3 and it's very nice...unless there is a decent savings I would prob go for it over the G10 but I have never handled one of those and cant speak of the grip difference.
Of all your options, the Caly3 is probably the best slicer and the ZDP model would have the best edge retention (except maybe the VG10 SE model). It also has great ergonomics second maybe only to the Stretch.
