Cel phone #s go public this month

#1

Post by tonydahose »

i got an email from my union..thought i would pass it on even though it is fun to give the phone to the kids when a telemarketer calls :D

REMEMBER: Cell Phone Numbers Go Public this month.

REMINDER..... all cell phone numbers are being released to telemarketing companies and you will start to receive sales calls.

.... YOU WILL BE CHARGED FOR THESE CALLS

To prevent this, call the following number from your cell phone: 888-382-1222.
It is the National DO NOT CALL list. It will only take a minute of your time.. It blocks your number for five (5) years. You must call from the cell phone number you want to have blocked. You cannot call from a different phone number.

HELP OTHERS BY PASSING THIS ON .. It takes about 20 seconds.

You can also use the website and register 3 numbers at a time:

You might take this with a grain of salt; I remembered this warning from some time ago, and found this one snopes.com: http://www.snopes.com/politics/business/cell411.asp

I dunno, my son got a new cell phone and recently started getting all kinds of telemarketing calls. I registered him on donotcall.gov today.

Sorry Tony, think this is just another false alarm.

Probably more a factor of who he gave the number to than anything else. For example, charities are exempt from the rules and most are more than willing to raise a few extra bucks by selling the names, addresses, and phone numbers of anyone who provides them, to other charities. Give to one, get solicited by all. Could also be a question of who had the number last, and how promiscuous they were with it.

Point is, listing cell numbers is not necessary.

Aside from exemptions for calls on behalf of political parties/candidates and charities, "cold calling" them is illegal, period. The only businesses that can legally call a cell phone number are those you have given the number to, and those who have an established business relationship with you. Those companies, the charities, and the politicos can legally call you even if you register your cell number.

Some companies may abuse that, to a degree, by allowing "sister" companies owned by the same "parent" as themselves to call you. However, legitimate businesses have more to lose than to gain by violating the law so they stay within the letter, if not always within the sprirt, of the law.
