The ANTI P'Kal

#1

Post by kbuzbee »

So all the recent discussions of hawks got me to dig out my P'Kal. I LOVE this knife. CF, wire clip and FFG w/CBBL. What's not to like?

But it got me thinking....

As I've said several times recently, my FAVORITE EDC right now is the DPUKPK.

I'm thinking the very best knife Sal could ever make (for me) would be a knife with a P'Kal style CF UKPK handle. The ergos of the UKPK are great. The P'kal's grip is good but the UKPK is better, IMO. (yes, I realize the intended use it completely different and this would be geared more to EDC)

Low ride wire clip - my absolute favorite!

DPUKPK S30V blade - more exotic steels would be fine but S30V is great.

CBBL lock - per the P'Kal, it seems to be doable in a smaller format than the BBL.

Orient the blade like the UKPK (no P'Kal style Emmerson opener needed).

Anyone else out there think this would be a winner??

So you want a UKPK DP with a CBBL?

I'm confused too... I think you mean a UKPK but with the blade shape of a P'kal? I could see that. I don't think the P'Kal is the most practical handle for EDC in the world..

And a slightly curved S30V blade?

I really like the blade profile of the P'Kal and the ball lock is nice. That's about it tho (but that's just my opinion)

Yes, I guess that's what I was ineffectively trying to say.

No, a stretch shaped blade.

No, as above, a DPUKPK blade profile (aka stretch).

I know there are a few things in the pipe that address some of this. The CBBL Sage and the Micro Manix 2 but both are leaf shaped AFAIK.

Anyway, I'd love one,

Right, I misspoke. What I was going for was a CF scale but with the CBBL oriented in it like the P'Kal's. Does that make any sense??? I know I said it had CF... Duh. Oh well..... :rolleyes:

I don't like tip-up carry or the removable wave-type opener of the P'kal. I wish that Spyderco could be convinced to make a blade-forward inverted-edge knife with four-corner clip mounts. A very slight Hawkbill (about 1/8" deep over the entire curve) for hooking on the back-cut and I would drop some bucks on it.

VG-10 steel to keep the cost down, FRN grips for light weight and strength...lots of IE guys would buy it and a trainer. If it randomly (oops!) had flipper-type opener (Yes, I am a heretic), I would be all but falling all over myself trying to toss Sal and Co some of my cash.

I'm not sure the CBBL fits with this model. Its basically a CF caly 3 with the DP blade which the mid lock seems to be an obvious choice for given its existing design with the leaf versions.

The CBBL knives also have a certain amount of bulk around the pivot that I think the caly 3 handle doesn't have the room for.

You've checked out the d'allara? I know its frn but it has the other 2/3 on your list

Sal's got the D'Allara 2.0 on the concept boards too.

* FFG
* G10 (if I recall)
* Thinner

I like the original but it's definitely a handful. Can't say anything for the performance of the drop-point but I love the rescue. :)

That was kinda why I started describing this using the P'Kal as a reference point (rather than the UKPK). The CBBL works great in that knife and it's pretty small.

I have a D'Allara and it's great but I'm thinking something that carries more easily.

Yeah, I haven't seen too many specifics on that one but it's definitely on my radar.

Thanks!
