My UKPK's spring broke!

#1

Post by Nick Steele »

Sorry to open on such a depressing note, but the spring on my UKPK broke last night  :(

I opened it up to have a fiddle, and as I closed it, I heard a sharp click and noticed a sudden loss on resistance. It turns out that the last inch and a quarter of the spring's snapped off:

I'm utterly devastated - I managed to break £85's worth of knife in my bare hands :o

I don't know of anything except a defect in the steel that would cause that. Sal's going to want to see it. Send it in.

Dang, that's a pretty significant failure. I'm sure the folks in W&R will take care of you though.

As we had to take note of in the british knife forums thread, this is the 3rd confirmed UKPK that broke. One in orange:

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showp ... stcount=17

and a third one (or more likely the first) a year ago was reported by JonathanD in the BBF thread, which is worth a read (Sal posted there, too, and with additional interesting info to boot).

That shouldn't happen. Most of the knives were apparently not used too hard, so user error is unlikely. And even then, IMO you would have to mistreat the knife really badly to ruin the spring. It is a pretty thick piece of metal after all...and it didn't even break (like you would expect) at the thinnest point, as you can see in the original pics compared to these ones (actually of a DPK):

One broken USPS spring is bad luck and maybe just a blemish in the material, but 3 of them sounds a little weird. The good news is, Sal is already aware of the case and will take care of it whatever the problem is.

Like most of the UKPKs out there, mine (black original one) is still fine; no signs of spring breakage yet. And I opened and closed it quite a few times now :D

Nick,
It looks like Sal replied on BB. In case you missed it...

We sure would have liked to see yours as well Jonathon. This has not happened in the past.

The spring on the UK is a pretty tricky bit of kit. We have to use a blade steel for the spring because the large Vanadium carbides in the blade tang were wearing down the normal stainless spring materials (420J2, 420mod, etc.), despite high polish. The addition of the "notch" complicates the problem. Special heat treats that are very critical in the process.

If we can test the failed part, we can learn. If we learn, we can improve. Humans must "always" improve. That's one of the "special human features" that separate us from other animals. That and the "edge" ;)

I just had the spring on my FG UKPK snap in the exact same spot not 10 minutes ago, I just bought it this last Tuesday so I have only used it a little and only to open up some mail. I am pretty bummed but i know Spyderco will take care of this.

Sakuraba#1,
Please send your UK in to us so we can take a look at it. Apologies for your disappointment, we'll make it right. Please send it to Sal's attention so it can go straight to him and our R&D team.

Nick,
I'll confirm that we have yours. I need to do a little checking first since it's not my area.

Yours is a completely different design and material than the others in this eight year old thread, but the answer remains the same: send it in. Spyderco will make it right, but they need to see it themselves.

It's too expensive for me to "send it in". I live in Spain. (I had the knife imported having heard so much about this particular brand)

However, I have carried out a brief diagnostic and can confirm that the spring mechanism has completely fractured. (See photo). Such a fault to an internal mechanism, I think we can all agree, would be pretty unlikely to happen through misuse.

I also totally understand that they might want to get their hands on this particular item in order to rectify and improve quality , I just don't want to foot the bill for it. I don't think that's being too unreasonable.

Anyhow, I have relayed this information to Spyderco via e-mail and am looking forward to them making it right!

Thanks for the reply and all the best,

Matt.
