Howdy,

How do you go about sharpening a very dull knife, ex. kitchen knife unsharpened for two years, with the 204? Is it possible in a reasonable amount of time?

Thanks for your input.

Take care,

Yes it is possible if the blade is OK structurally. Use the medium (dark) rods and take your time. Alternate from side to side so you get uniformity. Don't bear down too hard and be patient. It has been a while since I did a really bad one so it wouldn't hurt to look at the video or check the book. I have had blades that were just too poor of quality to get a decent edge on with the sharpmaker. Good luck

I had actually planend to redo all the 2+ year old dull kitchen knives for my mother when I got my sharpmaker. I whipped it out and grabbed her first knife, and sharpened until the rods needed to be cleaned twice without getting the blade to grip my fingernail. I then gave up. I must of spent half an hour or so on one knife out of about 40 and it still wasn't sharp. I think maybe really dull knives need those diamond rods. heh.

Either the diamond rods or get a good chef's steel to reprofile the edges on the kitchen knives. I also have several DMT diamond hones that I use to reprofile blades that are neglected or abused.

The last time soneone had me sharpen a truely DULL knife, I just got out my 200 grit benchstones($5 at hardware store). I have sharpened by hand since I was 5, so put about a 40degree on it as best I can, then the 204 for touchups.

I use a fine DMT diamond stone to reprofile the edge, then run it through the 204. I had to do that with a friend's switch over the weekend, an EDC knife that hadn't been sharpened in around 4 years! Took 3 hours, even with a diamond stone and the 204.

Keepin' it real...real sharp, that is.

takes some hard work to sharpen a really dull knife and the results are really satisfying! If the angle is broad, give it a 30-degress back-bevel and work on the 40s.. it'll work! And your kitchen knife will never be out of action!
