Jim, I'm really looking forward to seeing what that dye looks like on pvc and other pieces. I presume it should work well, and yes, we do need more white FRN(preferably the FRN Stretch :) ).

well i've got slightly bad RIT dye news. So i Dyed my h-1 spyderhawks black and i wore the PE IWB on my pants . Here in the south it gets pretty hot and i sweat alot well when i went to shower i found a black mark on my leg i tried to wash it off then started laughing because i realized what it was. Apparently the dye bled a little but the color on the handle didn't fade. Just a warning guys watch out for sweating of course i dyed them the night before i don't know for sure what caused it but my thigh was stained and so was my my back pocket

Thanks STI for the clip side pics. Also, thanks to all of you are doing the experimentation. I look forward to the results with the new dye recommendation.

Did you rinse it afterwards? Was this a White spyderco or colored? I used mine working out, outside in rain, threw on the floor flicked open/closed about 100 times and nothing has come off yet.

They were yellow handled first. I rinsed them as directed and rinsed them like 2 more times before wearing them. I didn't wash them with soap though but today i washed them with soap because i'm wearing white shorts and don't want black stains on them. They haven't bled since i dunno maybe it was a combination of the salt and consistent hot temps that did it. The RIT dye does contain salt it even says it on the package

Took the plunge and dyed my white Dragonfly red this morning. Really happy with the results. Going to let it dry for a couple days and then give it a another scrub before I EDC it. Will probably only use it with dark pants until I determine if the dye is completely colorfast or not. The process was super easy and took no time at all. I really want to pick up another one and go for kelly green next time.

all these dyed colors look really good but i was thinking if Spyderco considers this to be altered and does it void out warranty?

I've never taken apart a riveted knife before, and I have a feeling Sal would not be pleased if I did.

Could I just throw an H1 Salt 1 straight into the dye, metal and all? And could I get a baby blue akin to the one seen here (http://www.spyderco.com/forums/showthread.php?t=40042) with a yellow handle?

I'm guessing no and no, but it doesn't hurt to ask.

I don't believe you can It would come out a greenish/brown color most likely.

Definitely Walmart. Mine has the Rit in the laundry and cleaning products section.

Can't say for sure, but probably yes. That's why I started with a Dragonfly. Not a huge loss if I screwed things up.

Anyone else dye a salt yellow frn??

Ken
Ken,

I used Navy Blue RIT Powder. I guess that it was too dark, I should have gone with some thing lighter to get a green. I'd also check the knife often. I let mine soak for about 3 minutes before I checked it and by that time it was already dark as can be.

You can throw any of the knives into the water, not just H1 (so no need to take any of them apart). Since they only sit in the water for a few seconds to a few minutes, they're not going to rust. Just rinse them, dry them off, and blow them out with air when your done.

As for getting baby blue with a yellow handled knife, not going to happen. You have to have white handles for that.

I think a yellow h1 with the aquamarine dye would probably make a cool color

My black (formerly foliage green) G-10 Dragonfly is holding up fairly well. No dye bleeding off onto my hands or clothing (yet). It's only been a few days:

You can seriously just dunk them straight into a vat of dye? There are no chemicals that will ruin any parts?
I did figure that about the blue. I can only hope he releases one of that color I suppose. :D
