A knife for Australia
A knife for Australia
Hi,
I will be going to school in New South Wales, Australia in February (in a pretty rural town). I was thinking about getting a PE, G10 Delica for carry down there. Would this be a wise choice or would it still too big and scary looking?
Thanks.

Hi Manifest,
I can tell you that knife carriage is strictly prohibited here in NSW. However, you'll still find people in Oz carrying a penknife or SAK around for little things. Mainly the older folk for such stuff. If you don't cause problems I don't see why carrying a smaller EDC should pose any issues. However, the strict letter of the law is that unless you have genuine reason and/or it's part of your profession then knife carriage on your person on in your vehicle is against the law. ie: if you are a chef or are on the way to fishing or for food prep at a BBQ then it's OK. If the constabulary want to get you for something then they have an excuse. However if you are generally of good ilk in a country town you'd probably find people still carry knives with them.... but don't take it from me.
Which town are you going to and is it a permanent move or as an exchange student ?
BTW: sending the knife over in a package or checked into your luggage would be the safest way as you'd imagine EDCing on a plane is a bit troublesome :)
Personally if it was me in the country I would be going for the G10 Delica and accompany it with something a tad larger like a Manix or a Millie (i'd use this !)

Thanks for the reply!
I will be going to Nowra, New South Wales as an international student (4 years of medical school!).
Ok, so I will bring (in my check-in luggage) my g10 poliwog, millie, tasman salt, and I'll buy a g10 delica (i have a zdp that has serrations, so it's a bit scarier looking). I'll probably only edc the delica though.
Maybe I'll go up to Sydney on the weekends! I'm looking forward to the move (not looking forward to the giant spiders though..) :)

LOL,
Nowra is not a pretty rural town. It's actually one of the larger country towns... not a city, but a large hub town for the many surrouding suburbs. Very picturesque access to some nice towns, hinterlands and beaches. I was there a couple of months ago.
Studying at Woolongong Uni ?

I know I'm going to sound paranoid, but it's just the way I've been for the last few weeks, due to a run in with Aus Customs..
Spyderco folders are fine to bring into Aus based on the current criteria set by customs(ie 'letter of the law'). Just *in case* though, I'd advise tightening the pivots, especially on the models without a strong detent (eg Millie). Probably on the poliwog too, so it doesn't accidentally 'gravity' open when you pull back on the BB lock. You can always bring in some Torx bits to loosen when u get here, or buy a cheap set from the local Dick Smith Electronics or sth.
This is really 'cos the criteria that's most open to interpretation is 'opening by centrifugal force' ie Gravity blade. As you probably know, most pivots that are loosened up enough will be able to be 'flicked' open with a wrist action, and sometimes customs can be picky about it. Tightening pivots so that the opening is relatively stiff gets rid of the uncertainty, and you can always loosen them up when you get over here :) . The police are a lot more common sense about it, and don't call something a gravity blade or switchblade unless it's truly designed as such (this does include AOs though)
Not meaning to scare you or anything! Just a tip to make sure you don't lose any Spydies! :) Welcome to 4 years of funfunfun

One of the best things about this forum is there are people from all over the world and all walks of life who are willing to help. Canada, Australia, Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Japan, etc... very cool :)

If you can drive on the 'wrong' side of the road a hire car or loaned car for the time you are here will mean you ahve freedom to explore the countryside there. The beaches east of Nowra (about 10-15mins drive) are awesome all the way down the coast for about 30-50kms or so... and keep on driving if you can :p
I love that part of the world. Not too far from a nice friendly town ready to throw you a smile along with some fish & chips :D
Bring your camera and lots of storage space :)

oop, sorry, I come from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, with a population of close to 600,000 people. And the greater vancouver area has a population of over 2,000,000. My idea of rural is a bit skewed :D
Yep, I'll be studying at Wollongong! The campus and area look beautiful and I'm really looking forward to it. Thanks for the advice about the spydies, I'll be sure to tighten the pivots and bring a couple of torx sets over.
I'm probably going to look for a rental place when I arrive in January, but does anybody know a good place to buy a scooter for transportation? I will get my motorcycle license there, much cheaper than a car (student budget, I have to borrow 60,000/year :eek :) !
