Grail Knife: Acquired!

#1

Post by m.and »

When I first handled the Bob Lum C46 folding tanto about 8 years ago it quickly became my favorite knife. But at the time I was far to young to afford such a premium knife. As I grew older, my interest in knives waned, but I never forgot about that knife.

My love of knives was recently rekindled when I purchased my first Spyderco. Then I thought, I wonder if I can find one of those Lum tantos. So I did some research to find the model number and also found that they are quite coveted by knife nuts these days because of their rarity. I just assumed I would never own one. Until yesterday.

I have been constantly searching eBay and Blade Forums in hopes of being the first to spy the listing and quickly pounce on the sale. And yesterday I came across an eBay listing for one. Plain-edge, satin ATS-55 blade; black G-10, LNIB. I should have it in hand this week.

But that is not the end of the story. Upon close inspection of the photos, I noticed an amazing coincidence. The knife and I share the same birthday. Apparently for some time Spyderco marked the boxes with the full date of manufacture (like Chris Reeve birth certificates, I guess). And there it was, my birthday on the knife I have been wanting for almost a decade.

If you read all of this story, thank you. Please feel free to post comments or similar experiences. As soon as the knife arrives I will be sure to post some pics.

Regards,
Matthew

Congrats, its always nice to find that one...or many knife/knives you have been searching for forever, and to have it kinda personalized is very cool.
I'm still on the lookout for that elusive c27 Jess Horn, I grew up with Case,Colonial,Schrade,Buck and always loved that traditional type of knife. When i got older and really started collecting and using knives Spyderco became my favorite, but I never forgot those older designs and wished Spyderco would make a Traditional type design.
Well what do ya know they did and it is simply an amazing looking knife with Much character. That is my dream/goal, to own one of these gems..although they are very rare and if found hella expensive.

Congratulation.
It is always to feels great, when you find you Grail at affordable price. (In most cases it is easier to find than afford, at least in my cases).
Enjoy.
