New Native possible?

#1

Post by rathomps »

OK, I'm new to the forum and one of those who expressed disappointment at missing out on the Forum Native. However, I'm not new to Spyderco knives and as an aging west side local I've been purchasing Spyderco products for about as long as they have been in existence. I love to support local Colorado companies whenever possible. And this is a great one.

I realized, however, my disappointment was not so much missing out on a "limited run Forum knife" or a "great deal". I'm just sad that I missed out on a GREAT KNIFE. I've carried Natives for as long as they have existed because they're tough as nails, are a great value and they're made in my own backyard. The only thing I'd wished for years was for a full flat grind in S30V. The Native then becomes pocket perfection.

Given the popularity of the Forum knife. Any chance we could see a standard production run of Natives with the S30V full flat grind? I don't mind paying MSRP for Natives (still a good value in the knife world), I really don't care what color the handle is and I'm quite content with an undecorated blade and quite frankly, I don't even care if it comes in a box. It just seems that if you've latched onto a great design improvement maybe there's merit in incorporating those changes in the standard offering.

Just a thought, or maybe just a dream. Anyway, congrats to the forum members who scored one of the greatest pocket knives of all time.

+1 on everything you said. To me the Native IV is that knife, but the carbon fiber does add to the cost.

There is a planned production Native 4 that is to be produced in Golden in the future.

As I understand it, it will be the same style construction as the E4/D4 with the liners and FRN scales. I believe it's planned to have a FFG blade as well, but that's just from memory.

I haven't heard about the timeline, but I do hope to see it within the next year.

Perhaps not as standard production, at least not until the FRN version of Native IV comes out, but we might be able to talk Sal into a Sprint run of the current Native with a full flat ground blade. I'd bet a run of those with the tan handle used on the OIF/OEF Native would fly off the shelves.

I'm with you.

I would love to see a standard production FFG FRN Native myself. In general I like the regular Native, but I am not a fan of the regular native blade shape.

Pretty much the same way I feel about FRN Delicas.

An alternative to waiting is to send your current Native to Tom Krein for a full flat regrind.

This is the first one he ever did and I'm very pleased to have it.

What chapman said.

It is not the cheapest of all ways, but a) fast, b) possible to get right now and c) a custom knife for a still acceptable price, since all in all you could even stay under $100.

Not to mention the chance to have the flat grind made exactly to your likes and specifications.

WOW! That looks great with Tom's FFG AND the swedge. Other than the Forum Native on it's way to me, I have ever owned one, but I sure do like this treatment.
I prefer to ask for forgiveness rather than permission.

Tom does a very good job and my experience with his regrind turn around (how long it takes for him to receive it, regrind it, and return it) has been exceptional! This regrind cost shipping to him, $35.00 regrind fee plus $10.00 return shipping. I'm not certain if that has changed.

Tom does great work. In some ways he's a magician, but he can't make steel appear ;) so while that particular solution would work for some, it doesn't appeal to me, since it still has the swedge grind which I dislike. The forum Native blade is perfect, IMHO. No swedge, no beveled spine, just a pure and simple full flat grind.

Tan is not my first choice, but I love this idea. I am in for one.

 Does your Native 4 have a full width spine? Mine has a #!@%* beveled one.

Paul,
I am not big swedge fan. My Natives4 should be like yours. They have swedge, not as big as Native has. On some knives like Native4 or Lum Chinese, swedge doesn't bother me much, on some I absolutely hate it. Of cause I would prefer Native4 blade without swedge, but as of now I am enjoying my Native4 almost as much as Caly3.

I missed out on the forum model but am anxiously awaiting the FRN Native IV. I hope it's not that much heavier if they go to the liners+FRN and that the handle profile is the same as the carbon fiber model. The second bump in the handle on the FRN Native is the worst part of it and I ground mine down some.
