Modified Spyderco's

#1

Post by JimP »

To better suit my needs I have modified a couple, most notably my Para. It is now very comfy for my hand and offers a second grip outside of the choil.

It is smaller now which suits carry in my coin pocket much better(my preferred carry position).

The radius on the handles edges feels better for hard and prolonged cutting.

Have any of you modified your Spydies to better suit your needs? If you have I would love to see them. :)

Anyway a couple of bad pics for ya, btw that is timber dust on the blade not rust :o :-

I really like that, JimP! Looks like it feels better in the hand from here. Here's mine:

I mostly just adjust the spines when I pick one up with a broken tip. Makes for some interesting variations on the original model.

I'll see if I can shoot some pics later.

My DIY mods have been fairly minor. I rounded the transition between the thumbramp and spine on my user Calypso Jr., modified the handle on my user C41 Native a bit to full expose the Spyderhole, and have broken the edges of a couple Spyderholes that I considered a bit uncomfortable. I've left the major stuff to folks who have the equipment and, even more importantly, the talent.

Steve Rice (STR) customized R2 and Stretch, both rebuilt with titanium liners under wood scales. Lignum Vitae in the case of the Stretch, stabilized Curly Koa in the case of the R2. Steve also modified the R2's handle to my specifications, to more closely resemble that of the the Stretch and reshaped the rounded blade tip into a splinter picker.

C83 Schempp Persian, rescaled in Desert Ironwood by "Oupa" and Jigged Bone Kiwi, both given the full flat grind treatment by Tom Krein...

most of my carry spydies get a glowing roundel
Image

the TI clips on salts can be polished and flame colour, the atlantic has been waved too
Image

this one has a huge amount of time in it
mirror polished convex, and a slightly modified handle
if you extended the lines on the handle, they would all meet in the centre of the spydie hole. the stippling on the grip is a random drilling with a ball mill in a dremel

Other than stripping the clips on some Spydies, and removing the backspacer on one of my Millies, I don't have the skills to mod my folders. So, double congrats to the above modders.

Very nice mods everyone, there are some really good ideas floating around here(not that I am surprised of course).

Echo63, what are your glowing roundels? They really give your knives an individual look

Here is a Stretch inspired Salt 1, which after 2 re-bevels and probably 10-15 sharpenings and a truck load of cardboard cutting, is now starting to keep a respectable edge.

It accually works quite well - I just had to get used to the change in shape - and the acute point.

JimP - I love the look you gave the Salt 1 - I love those curves - that's gorgeous.

- best wishes, Jazz.

I really like your handle treatment. Please tell me what you used to make the lines and what ball tip did you use for the stippling - was it carbide or diamond? If you could, would you please post a pic of your tools? :) I really want to "do up" my D4 SS handle, and maybe a Cricket or two, but I need your help. Thank you.

- best wishes, Jazz.

What an awesome thread! I had to bump this one for some updates or new ideas.

I wish I had some awesome pictures to share, but I don't, so you will all have to settle for the following:

Image
From Top to Bottom:
1) Caly3 (unmodified)
2) UKPK with jryan76 custom grind - not Anso-style, more like kudu horn
3) Para with tip-up, left-hand, wire clip mod
4) GITD SAK Huntsman

Better view of the Para mod

Does anyone remember how to size pictures?
