Bug question...Novelty? Purpose?

#1

Post by RJNC »

Just received my first Bug. Interesting little knife. My question is, what was the purpose of this knife? Novelty knife? Easy EDC carry?

Yes. ;)

It is a sharp, functional, non-threatening, non-locking knife that should be legal to carry almost anywhere. It is well constructed with good steel in the blade, which is rare in knives this size.

But with a handle length of one and a half finger widths for me, it is simply a novelty. Those with fingers small and limber enough to hang on to the thing can get more use out of it, though.

Yeah that's what I kind of thought too, and I only collect mainly small clipless Spydercos. And even I find it way too small. Just seems like if they had made it more "ladybug" sized it would have made for a great EDC knife. Any plans for a Bug XL Sal?

I will say that there are more "bug" sizes in-the-works.

As I have noted before ... It's the perfect knife for a doll. I have one that I'm sending to my niece for her American Girl dolls.

I think the knife makes for a great piece of functional jewelry. You can put a nice edge on it and the size works great for small jobs with limited clearance.

Speaking of jewelry, SFO has several bugs made up by SanteFe with gemstone handles. Very pretty, but a little pricey.

How about making some upscale models like the old SpyderKeys. Pun intended on the scale part...bone, MOP, and natural materials on the handles.
...oh you know why!

They are cheap, I paid 6 bucks each for the ones that I bought. Also this is the first knife that I have given my wife that she says she could use and is interested in carrying.

put on on your keychain and you will find out how useful they are. I use mine more then my EDC.

I love small knives, and for a keychain I think it would be perfect.

I just wish it was made in J Land, or USA.

Neat little knives. As has been said, many ladies who would not carry even a Ladybug are willing to carry and, perhaps more remarkably, use them. Some I'm sure, once they see the value of a small knife, will graduate to something a bit bigger.

For those looking for "upscale", I've already seen engraved ones and some with "Yellowhorse style" overlays and filework on eBay. Slightly bigger version with bolsters, might make an interesting "finish-it-yourself" kit.

+1 . I put one on my house key ring and use it to open my mail and packages. Having it on a keyring makes it much easier to handle.

Bought 1 as a novelty, 2 were gifts. I always have one on me and surprisingly use it every day. I would LOVE a Bug the size of an Urban or dragonfly. If you don't have one GET one.

Lets see the other versions have at LEAST 8cr13....maybe even 154CM if the price can be right.
