I've been intrigued by the meaning of the etching on the right side of blade that is found on certain Spyderco models, such as the Caly3. At first I thought that it denoted a Golden CO knife, but it couldn't be that because the Caly3 is made in Japan. Upon closer examination, it occurred to me this etching has the stylized letters S-A-L.
Does this etching mean that Sal Glesser designed the knife?
Thanks,
Ira

It is Sal's "mark". You'll see Eric's on others like the Dodo.

Hi, you are correct, that´s the signature on knives designed by Sal Glesser.

And, AFAIK, all the collaborations have marks, Howard, Ed etc even Jens on the Rock Lobster.... I think it's very cool and love to see them.

Ken, the only exception I can think of to that is the almite version of the Michael Walker. All the other collaboration model's I'm aware of have a "maker's mark", or the maker's name, somewhere on them.

Thanks Paul, I don't have that one.... Interesting...
Anyway, I think having the maker's mark on the blade really adds to the blade...
I really like Howard's mark on the Phoenix. The three dots GOW is cool too.

The Centofante 3 and 4? They don't have a mark or name on the blade or handle, just in the name of the models.

Anyone know why some of the "altered" models dont have "SAL" on blade? i.e. - Stretch FRN Models.

I was wondering about that too. I was a little disappointed to not see Sal's mark on my FRN Stretch.

So that's what it is! I never noticed it is literally SAL.

Knives which are a team effort are unmarked. So it might be that the changes between it original Stretch, which bore Sal's mark, and the Stretch II were a joint effort by the design team and he wanted to recognize that.

On occasion the marks aren't where you'd expect to find them.
