#1

Post by Seanski »

Do any of you have and use the Byrd Duckfoot? I was thinking of getting one to take on the road with me. How does it work for you?

thanks,
Sean

I like to take the byrd diamond Duckfoot and the Spyderco "Golden Stone" which is a ceramic version, when I travel.

I'm planning on doing a new video of the Duckfoot stones, (both the diamond and ceramic veresions) but have just been too snowed lately. We'll probably adopt the diamond byrd under the Spyderco banner and market the pair as a set.

Sal,

thank you for the prompt reply. One question I have is on the duckfoot do you just turn/spin the unit around with you fingers to sharpen the other side of the blade?

What is the Golden Stone? I havent seen that in the catalog. Also, how does the Duckfoot compare to the profile stones medium and fine set? Im trying to figure out what to buy for travel.

I own a Sharpmaker, a Duckfoot and a Lansky Deluxe kit. All have benefits.

The Lansky is great to sharpen really dull blades or to change the angle. Coarse stones make it fast and simple to do that.

The Sharpmaker is my main sharpening device. Use it for kitchen knives and pocketknives, and it gets them scary sharp. Great sharpener, my favourite!

The Duckfoot is best of both worlds. It is coarse enough to sharpen fast and easy, but fine enough to get a good, sharp edge. I love to use the Duckfoot first to sharpen, and use the fine Sharpmaker rod to polish the blade after that. Duckfoot and Sharpmaker are a great couple ;)

For traveling I suggest to take the Duckfoot. Small, relatively light weight and good results! Comes with leather pouch that prevents it from slipping when sharpening a blade.

I've also been looking at the Duckfoot. I have a Sharpmaker, some Shapton glasstones & other waterstones, & I've been trying to sharpen my kitchen knives, but for some reason, I'm nervous about freehand sharpening my Spyderco pocket knives (I have worked on my plain edge Spyderco kitchen knives, though) & my pruners, & some other odds & ends.

I think a combo packaging of the Duckfoot & golden stone would be great, especially if accompanied by an explanatory DVD-some of us need all the help we can get...

a bit OT, but I would love to see Spyderco reintroduce some kitchen knives to its lineup-the time is right, everyone has to cook & eat, right? & we should be able to do it with Spydercos...

I have been meaning to try the Duckfoot for some time. I would love to buy a set of the Spyderco-ized Duckfoot plus the Golden stone.

I hope you get a chance to make the video sometime soon.
