Next Mule?
What are your thoughts on the next Mule? I'm thinking H-1 has a great chance of making it in there!

It's already chosen and perhaps finished. It is supposed to be a new steel from Sal's source foundries in china. 9C something.

hi Scottie,
We've got 9Cr18 Mo mules already made.
Hitachi has agreed to sell us some Super blue, but we have to buy more than we'd need for a mule team run and there is a 9-12 month lead time. It's also quite expensive.
Tom Krein has offered to grind H1 to the full flat Mule Teeam spec, but again the total package would end up quite expensive.
Part of the deal is that we don't end up with excess inventory.
We're looking at some Carpenter steel that has promise. We threw a G-10 handle on a mule team prototype made from Carpenter's CTS-XHP. It tested quite well on CATRA tests and I've been cutting with it for about a week. Impressive stuff.
We also tested some Carpenter powder metal 440C that tested very well on CATRA.
While in Seki a month ago, we discussed some possibilities:
One of our Seki makers has a damascus mule team prototype that they made for us. It's a VG-10 core with special layers, including 420J2 and nickel silver.
Takefu has a new steel they call their Cobalt special; about 1.% carbon, 15-17 Cr and 2.0-3.0 cobalt.
I can always get one for me, but I don't know if we can sell 1000?

Wow! The potential Mule project steels just keep getting better and better! I plan on picking up at least one of each, and probably a few of the Damascus (price permitting). While I'm not a steel junkie (yet), I do like building things, so each new release gives me an excuse to buy a new knife so I can build some scales for it. Like the movie says, "If you build it, they will come."sal wrote: ...9Cr18 Mo...

+1 on the H1 and Superblue
Would it help keep cost down if the H1 Mule was made to order? I.E. you would have to wait for it to go to Tom before you would get them, that way they aren't making a lot them and having to pay for Tom to grind them. Just my .02

Super blue is an excellent steel but gets chippy if run at around RC63-64.
The Takefu steel seems intriguing to me. They typically make good steels. I hope to try this steel someday, somehow.
The carpenter CTS XHP steel is a powder steel stainless d2, right?
440C isn't my kind of steel. It will be interesting to see how much of an improvement the powder process makes.
I've had, and still have a bunch of damascus steels based on VG10. Some are excellent steels, as would be expected with VG10 as their base, or core.
I'm not an H1 fan yet. Still mostly an alloy/high speed steel guy. I am working on a complete set of mules, so....

To the best of my knowledge, this is not a steel in regular production anymore.Halfneck wrote:I keep hoping for L6.
Over at BladeForums, in ShopTalk, the guys have been talking about an L6 replacement which they have not been getting good results out of....
I believe the L6 that is still available is old stock and scrap.
Which obviously, would make it hard to get for a Mule.
But, I am with you, I would like to see it.
