Blade defect? Please advise (Khukuri)

#1

Post by shiftdelete »

I just got my Khukuri, and I noticed a small defect on the blade.

Is this normal? Should I return it?

This looks like a slip up that happened during the grinding. While this is not normal from a fit and finish point of view, I wouldn't return it as it really has no effect of the knife's performance.

These things can happen on factory knives and in my view it's fine.

I would echo the same opinion of the above i.v. However, like I always say if it's bothersome to you and you are not likely to enjoy carrying it then it should go back.

cheers,

If it's going to be a user, don't be worry. :p If a safe queen, then ship her back.

Completely up to you! Won't hurt the knife at all. Even if its a user it would bother me, I'd send it in... And have it replaced.

I would say if it bothers you then by all means do return it for the replacement. For the knife with the price tag of Spyderco Khukuri I think it is not bad to expect perfection. If it was me I would return it. Tell us what you have decided in the end.

Mine has the same mark. I'm not going to worry about it.

I understand how you feel because I have 4 limited run safe queens that will never be used by me, but I don't worry about things like that on production, or user, knives.

Just another opinion. :)

I'll echo some of the above posters, it's entirely up to you to send it in. This is a $150 knife that shouldn't have blemishes like that, but on the other hand, function is not affected. So, up to you, you'd be right either way.

It would bother me a bit for a few days but eventually I would forget about it. I wouldn't send it in, I've found that I am a much happier knife owner when I only let functional problems bother me. My Khukri has similar marks on both sides from using my Lansky kit now anyway. :)

I wouldn't bother turning it in, although I agree it's a blemish from a f&f point of view. If it makes you happier, by all means try to get it replace from your dealer or Spyderco directly. But it wouldn't affect function and that's what spydies are mostly all about.

As long as lock up is solid and there are no other issues I wouldn't give it a second thought.

wouldn't doubt if it is a mark from sharpening on the belt sander. A passaround Temperence 2 I used has the same mark, and I think it's due to the forward can't of the because the forward can't of the flat grind leaving full thickness steel over the rear of the cutting edge. When hand sharpening the Temp 2 I had to tilt the blade quite a bit to avoid hitting exactly where that mark is on the knife.

Ok guys, thanks for all the responses. In the end, I also found another problem with the grind on the "spyder" side of the blade-- near the top and back of the blade, the grind was uneven and produced a ripple effect when viewing the knife, and was noticeable when running your finger along the top of the blade- a slight indent.

So, back it went. The replacement Khukuri did not have any of the previous problems. The only noticeably defect was a tiny spot on the "schempp" side of the blade, near the edge of the blade, where the brushed finish has a slightly different shine. it's very very tiny, and I have decided to keep it, as this is going to be my EDC blade.

Thanks for the advice, and now I have my sights set on a Street Beat and possibly the mini persian.

I know a couple of older gentlemen who have huge, valuable collections and they have told me that there is no such thing as a perfect knife. My compliments to Spyderco for again taking care of their customers.

Glad it worked out for you.

Couple years ago I found a knifestore with a couple Spyderco Ti Lum Folding Tantos in stock. Both of them had grind issues on the blade and the scales were really scuffed up for some reason, but I didn't want to give up a chance to get one so I accepted the imperfections. For a current production model, though, I'd probably end up returning it since the imperfections would end up bugging me.
