Spyderco Viele 2 Trade Value

#1

Post by drstrangelove »

I have a NIB V-2 I'm thinking of trading with a fellow and wanted to get some input on what you think the trade value on this knife should be. PM me if you don't feel comfortable listing a price. I am not selling this knife nor will take any offers to purchase or trade - I am only curious as to its current trade value. Thanks.

BTW I did find one old listing with the same question and it's answer was here: http://www.spyderco.com/forums/showthre ... ight=viele

Thanks to those who PM'd me too.

People compute "trade value" in different ways, MSRP of the Viele 2 was $170. Street price for Spyderco knives in the USA is generally around 65% of MSRP while they're in production, so say around $110 - $115 in the case of the Viele. After they've been discontinued for a while, as is the case with the Viele 2, one of two things generally happens. The value, NIB, either levels off at slightly below the former "street price", or the model develops a cult following and increases significantly in value. The Viele 2, to the best of my knowledge, would fall into the first of those categories.

just watch ebay for them, see what the next 3-5 viele 2s go for, and then take the average. that'll give you a good idea of current "value."

You do not have to wait, just go to advanced search and mark "complete listings"
Three pieces were sold with last weeks
$89 + $6 shipping new, no box, auction
$122 shipped like new with little wear  no box, auction
$137 shipped NIB sold BIN,

IMHO, prices very inconsistent and unpredictable.

My top choices Natives5, Calys, C83 Persian

It's good to have a ballpark figure. However, the value of what you're trading is going to fluctuate relative to what you're looking to get in return.

I had a Viele 2, which I happened to buy from Deacon, and traded it even up for a Benchmade Spike. (I can feel the evil eye coming from across the NY border. Sorry man. ;) ) The Viele was a newer knife and in better condition than the Spike, but I'd been searching quite a while for a Spike and they're kinda hard to find. So some difference in quality and condition on one side was offset by desire and rarity on the other. I got a knife I'd really wanted in return for one that was very nice but I just didn't carry. Did I come out ahead in a dollar for dollar comparison? Probably not, but that's not how I chose to keep score in this case.

I always wanted to try a Viele. G10 on one side and micarta on the other. An interesting design.
