A used Spydie would be the way to go for me. I just couldn't do that to a Chinook, Manix, or Millie, or whatever. I like them just as they are. :D

Haha.

It's actually advertised as a screwdriver/saw. Poor Spydie.

I'm new to the Spyder trade.

Is it ever a good idea to buy a used knife? I would buy something that was advertised as "new" or "new in box" but I'm not sure I would buy something that was formerly an EDC.

Am I crazy and just over paying?

Actually, if it wasn't for the crazy clip and the rounded tip, that endura doesn't look too different from my worker endura.

I don't mind buying used or "pre-abused" spydies, but I make sure to know what condition it's in before I consider how much I'd pay for it. A while back I got an SS SE and a SE FRN endura set for only $25, but the SS needed a bit of reconditioning and sharpening, while the FRN had no clip, and it didn't last long before I broke the tip (and made it into a SE Razel type thing :D ).

I guess if you're only looking for collectors, you'd be better off making sure it's very close to mint, but if you want a user/beater, you can't go wrong with a used spydie, they're tough (but you'll probably have to sharpen it).

cool thread! i havent seen yet, its pretty cool though these knives keep going with the users that have kept them going.

someone must have noticed how good the knife really was to do some surgery to it to keep it lasting and now they are in more peoples hands

Here's a few more I've found. IIRC the Delica was lost outside for a period of several months. Not really abuse but neat how well it cleaned up:

LOL! Nothing like a nice laugh after seeing all these abused Spydies. All I can say is that it must be a testament to quality construction for these knives to keep working after such alteration.

I gotta say...seeing the re-hab of some of those "neglected" spydies is making me reconsider buying some of them on the 'bay. I'd always ignored them until now, but considering the price for a knife that would still have plenty of life left, why not give an aging Spyderco a nice loving home for its last years?

We would rather be the knife in your pocket, because is "works" better, than the knife in your showcase, because it "looks" better.
