Anyone ever move a Civilian clip?

#1

Post by MCM »

My son (a lefty) has an interest in a Civilian.
I have looked for a L hand version, and am now thinking
about just converting one to L hand carry.
Have performed task this on many tip down folders, have the drill & taps in hand (but not the knife)

Can I get a L hand Civilian clip from Spyderco? Or will I need to use something else?

Just curious if there would be any problem drilling & tapping a G10
Civilian.

Is this common for left handed Civilian owners?

Thanks

I know its not really what you want to hear, but I have found that within a couple weeks your body will learn where the knife is, regardless of whether your a lefty or not. I carry my ZDP Endura and Spyderench in my left pocket and my Dodo in my right. I am right handed. When I need my knife my left hand goes for the Endura without any thought. It took a couple weeks to learn it but it wasnt so bad. Good luck with whatever route you go. The Civilian is such a beautiful knife! I can stare at mine for hours. Its just so elegant and scary at the same time. I don't know if I could carry it every day, I would be too afraid of breaking it.

Again, it's not the answer you wanted -- but the Civilian does deploy well from a front-left pocket into a reverse grip via an inertial opening...

Can be done, yes. Has been done, yes. Advisable, no. The main problem with moving the clip would be that the Civilian only has a single liner. Mounted on the left scale, the clip would only be threaded into G-10. That's not the most desirable arrangement. G-10 has a lot of good properties, but the ability to be tapped for small screws which are subject to load and retain them is not one of them.

Thanks Deacon

Thats what I didnt know.
I have no problem tapping alum or CF for a clip,
but draw the line on G-10. :D

(As a lock back, didnt think it had a single liner. Its probably only there for the clip)

Thanks again

This got me thinking, would it be possible to disassemble the Civilian and then reassemble it with the liner on the opposite side? I'm not suggesting or recommending this, just wondering if it is a possibility. Doing this would most likely void the warranty.

I didn't find the thread on a quick search, but someone bought two Civilians and made one linerless and the other with double liners. I remember it as being within the past 3 months, but am not completely sure.

I don't know if I'd advise it, but it might give you something to think about.
