It is quite an interesting problem you posted here, as spyderco should mak guns. You should know that a business can be founded based on three criteria: First, is the capital (or the assets) of the firm; the second, is the specific competences of that firm; the third: personal preferences of the owners and/or associates. Now, thinking at Spyderco, I don't know if the firm has the money to build and maintain a guns business, but it definitely lacks the competence, and perhaps the personal preferences. Or, to be more clear, I'll give you an exemple: Coca-Cola surely has the money, but it has neither the competence, nor the will of making anything else than drinks. Spyderco does some metalworking, (and I think you are right, mostly in Japan, which is not necessarily a bad thing, they make great steel there) but here stops the similarity with a gun factory. Think only the R&D involved...
