Switchblades vs. Spydies

In a recent bladeforums.com posting a grunt

complained of the failure of his issue

Benchmade AFO ; I find <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> 100% reliable and

suggested the C 63 "Chinook" for it's overall

rugged design. As most of you forumites must

know, I stand against the "wigetry" of the

spring-loaded knife. What's your opinion ?

Remember guys, its not the knife that's "bad" or "evil" but the person using it. I plan on getting a Benchmade 350 Pardue in automatic sometime soon. Although auto's aren't generally looked favorably on by law enforcement because of their "sinister" backgrounds, I don't think its a big deal to own or even carry a auto just so that you do so within the confines of your local laws.

I like autos <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>nut, don't get me wrong. But <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>s are so much more practical. If you get caught with an auto, your in trouble. If you get caught with a <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>, most of the time they will let it slide. Besides, if it is the speed of opening that appeals to you, why not just get more <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>s. Spydies open just as fast as most autos.

But this is just my opinion. I have never handled an auto before and I'm kinda <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>minded. So that might get in the way of me going for something else other than a <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

Spydies are easy to get by cops. Autos on the other hand, are **** hard.

If you want speed, get an Emmerson Commander, and rip up your pockets.

I carry Spydies, and practice. 2 knives(r/l)in 2 seconds, out and back in 5.

The way I see it, it's just a spring. It's presence or absence does nothing to change the knife's overall character. However, the person behind it makes all the difference in the world.

According to Instructors at the FBI traing academy most non-auto knives are faster that most auto's in presentation and practical fighting ability. I have both and have lots of auto's but I'd prefer a non auto for fast presentation in a bad situation. Basicly training makes the difference.

Since this question was about comparing any
spyderco to any switchblade my take is simple.

I'll take the spyderco over a switchblade any day.

The primary reason is the mechanical simplicity
of the spyderco knife when compared to all
springs and such.

I've used switchblade in grimy conditions and the

me my Spyderco's any day

Where I work, I sell switchblades(automatic knives) and Spydies all day long, and can buy just about anything I want as far as knives are concerned. One of my carry knives is a Spydie, and none of them are auto's. It's easy to figure out why, for one thing a Spyderco knife is much more simple in construction and function than an auto, and they also cost a whole **** of a lot less. I'm not sure what the big deal is about auto's, but some people like them, just like some people like one company over the other...

I guess it's just a matter of taste, experience, and preferance.

I carried a BM Auto Styker while in the Army and it was a fine knife. The Spring eventually broke, but that will happen with any auto over time. Autos have a certian "cool factor" but now I just collect them for display.

I own two autos...a Robbie Dalton "Red Devil" and a Microtech "Kestrel". They are both superb knives, but technically the simplicity of a Spyderco is unsurpassed. I can open my Shabaria about as quickly as either of my autos. More than anything, I can impress my friends with the automatics.

that are quite appealing ( and innovative );
Spydies, on the other hand, have a certain
"character" to them. Clip, Spyderhole &
Spyderedge started a new trend in knives BOTH
manual AND auto ; when something soooo innovative comes along, I jump on that band wagon. <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> demtek9, I was an infantryman. You
can't leave something like your life to chance ( such as with a fallible auto )you

enough! Any of my buddies ask me about the best choice for a tactical, I tell'em <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>!
As for collecting, switches are good for
"illustrative" purposes, but little else.

I dunno Ryan, I'd agree that Spydies are faster than a lot of autos, but the BM 1000S Spike is pretty fast. I might have to bring one by the SFO and test ya on it.
