Slip-It Apology

#1

Post by SecSpyral »

This is a slight apology to the Spyderco Staff. Earlier I said that I did not find any value in the Slip-It Line of knives. I was wrong, and Sal, once again, you were right. I got my Urban in the mail yesterday and I am amazed at the quality. It is definitely worth what I paid for it and more. Amazing little knife, I love the slip-it action and will be buying more. :)

yeah, Sal knows what he's about, that's for sure. I LOVE my UKPK, and I want an Urban badly, but it's not in the budget right now. I'd probably trade my ukpk for a leaf urban if it was golden made s30v (for some reason I just love that combo), because I'd love the smaller blade for a sheeple knife, but oh well. I'll stick with my ukpk for the foreseeable future :)

Oh, and good on you for being able to admit when you were wrong, I wasn't sure about the non lock issue before I tried out a ukpk in a passaround, but it's great and feels sooo secure.

Good for you! I can't decide if I want an Urban or UKPK since they're available in the same colors.

I only went with the Urban because I wanted the Wharnie blade and the orange handles. I will probably buy the leaf model next.

I was slow to see the use for the UKPK but after getting the Orange one and then a Black one I am a big fan of this type of knife. I bought an Urban Orange Wharncliffe and am thinking about a FG Urban. This are very nice knives sharp and verrrryyy ergonomic. More so than most other knife companies on the market. After getting use to the Slipit type of knife I see no need for a lock. Saves me one step in the closing process. I grew up on slip joint pocket knives and welcomed the locking knives when they were introduced on pocket size knives in the seventies and eighties. The way the Spyderco Slipts function you would have to be very careless to get the knife close on you. And if anyone could do that it would be me. i really love Spydercos Slipits. I am a real aficionado of this type of knife! Thank you Spyderco for bringing the type of knife to the market for us. Spyderco is really the innovator and leader in knives.

Thanx Scott, I appreciate that. accepted.

I find that if I keep a drafty brain (opened mind), I manage to learn something new every day, often times the new knowledge will alter prevous opinions.

I'm really glad it changed your mind! I sold the Urban to Scott after trying it out myself and I have to say it truly changed how I thought about non-locking folders! I was amazed at how secure it felt in your hands.

I loved the look of the Urban with the wharncliffe blade but I think I might try to source a Orange UKPK soon. After carrying the Caly3 I really like the size and shape overall, which is strange for me because I tend to gravitate toward the smaller Spydies.

Scott, sorry about the scratches. Glad they buffed out :o

After reading this thread, I think I just might have to try out a Slip-It. I share the same hesitation that some of you originally had. Spyderco Urban = added to my wish list.

the ukpk is my current favorite knife. my black ukpk (for work) and after work or a day off either my orange or foliage green makes its way into my pocket.

the leaf blade & full flat grind, make this thing a monster at slicing.

The UKPK is a great knife. I had my doubts too. After carrying for a few, it now has a spot in my EDC rotation. It's light, strong, and made of the same materials as the Manix and S30V Millie.

I was extremely skeptical about the slipits intitially. I have always carried Clipits but earlier this year I became obsessed with traditional slipjoints but after a couple of months of carrying them I thought, " Wow it would be nice if these opened quicker and were easier to access." Well then appears the UKPK. It is super handy and the S30V is much better than most of the steels on the traditionals. I found out after using it for a few weeks that it is actually easier to close one handed that a locking clipit. I carry it in combo with a Koster Bushcraft, or a CF/Superhawk. It is really a great knife and gets the most use during a day.

This thread has made me smile. As a UK Spyderco fan, slippits are all I can EDC without good reason. (It's also pretty much all you can get through customs as a personal import too but that's another story!). I do have plenty of Spyderco lockers that I tend to use when hunting where I tend to favour a blade shape along the lines of the Wegner designs and the Stretch.

I love my UKPKs and have the same line up as 5.56 posted photos of. I also have a T-Mag for good measure but haven't gone down the Urban route just yet. With four UKPK variants already there's no pressing urgency for the Urban but I suspect the I'll probably end up with both variants sooner or later. The vague prospect of a CF UKPK and the more likely prospect of the UKStretchPK leave me drooling. The T-Mag design but with a slippit action would also float my boat. I'm pretty sure that a UKStretchPK would probably become my permanent EDC and when hunting small game that doesn't require a larger blade it will oust the locking knives from that task too. Such is my faith in the slippit design, I can well see me buying several UKStretchPKs for EDC and hunting.

It's very nice to see what has been a skeptical public, that isn't forced to carry non-lockers slowly come round to the slippit design. It really is excellent and some people are missing out by ignoring it completely.

I spent some time last night after reading this thread looking at urbans and I have decided I need both blade shapes. We are stuck in the house due to a blizzard right now and the UKPK is clipped in my pajama pants. It will be my main EDC until the FRN stretch 2 comes out.

Non locking folding knives are great as long as used safely. In the Boy Scouts we were never allowed a locking blade on our knives and I still have all 10 fingers!! :) I was however very careful and respectful of the blade and this is the key to safe knife handling.. Locking blades are great but locking folders are still folders and need to be treated as such. Personally I think the slip joint folders are a great addition to Spyderco's line... Mike
