MBC Update/Counter-Blade Craft Course

#1

Post by Michael Janich »

To all forumites:

Having recently completed the first MBC level 4 class, I've been studying the comments of the participants and reviewing the course outline. The most frequent comment I received was that the course should be two days long instead of one. It seems there was just too much material to absorb in a single day.

I've also been wrestling with the law enforcement side of MBC. Since LEOs are typically not authorized to use knives, MBC training is often not regarded as appropriate for their needs. However, the officers who have taken the class have universally acknowledged that the counter-knife and weapon-retention aspects of MBC are very relevant to their needs.

To solve both problems, I've decided to delete the counter-knife portion of MBC level 4 to make it more manageable as a one-day class. The counter-knife material will become the foundation of a new course that I have named "Counter-Blade Craft (CBC)." This will be a separate course that deals with defensive tactics against knives, both empty handed and with improvised weapons. It will also cover handgun retention techniques for LEOs, both with and without a knife.

Unlike levels 1-4, which are a linear progression, CBC will be a stand-alone course that can be taken separately by LEOs and civilians.

We have not yet scheduled the first CBC class, but I am interested in your input on the best locations and times to conduct one. Like the MBC classes, I am prepared to teach this course on the road.

Finally, there are still slots available for the May MBC classes in Golden. If you're looking for a chance to develop some solid defensive skills in a short period of time, this is it. Check the main Spyderco page under recent events for more information on registration.

Excellent idea, Mr. J--

Can't wait to continue to develop my tactical Budwieser-bottle skills. . .

My vote for times and location would be Tuesday evenings at the Golden Community Center (1 block from my place)!

(okay, @ spyderco on a weekend would be fine)

see you in May,
Vince

Hi Mike,
The CDC class sounds great. Are you going to make the change in the MBC Level 4 class curriculum before the Sept. 15 class? I’m hoping to make it out to MBC 3 & 4 in Sept. Maybe there could be a CDC class on the Friday before (9/13). How does one set up to have you come out for a local class?

Dear Mr. Skin:

Thanks for the post and your continued interest. The change to Level 4 will occur immediately. If there is sufficient interest to set up a CBC class in conjunction with the September level 3-4 classes, I would be happy to do so. Anyone else interested please post and let me know.

As for organizing an MBC class in your area, please e-mail me direct. Although these classes are identical to the ones conducted in Golden and result in the same certificates of completion, I coordinate and book them all myself.

Stay safe,

Thanks Mike,
It is good to see a course that acknowledges that there are different knife training needs for law enforcement. I will try to combine a CBC course with a trip home.
