Hawkbill Lava

#1

Post by grunt0331 »

i spent a couple hours at the gun show in Austin yesterday. i made a few knife purchases, one of which being a Boker Subclaw (love it). the blade on the Subcom is very similar to Chad's Lava design.
...so, my idea was a Lava with a hawkbill blade, similar to the subclaw. it wouldn't actually be a karambit because it would lack the finger hole, but i think it would be sweet.
i love the CLB designs and hope there will be more collaborations with Spyderco in the future.

I'd rather see a reverse S like the Cricket. I think the Lava would be a great platform for this blade shape and it would lend itself to more EDC tasks. And G10 or even FRN for weight.

The original concept of this knife was wharncliffe, as Chads design.
I would like to see one in real. ;)

A wharncliffe blade makes sense with the Lava, I'd love to see either a Wharncliffe or a hawkbill, I think they both would be very useful

I'd like to see a Ladyhawk, that would be a sweet little beast.

I wouldnt mind a Wharncliffe Lava, or a blade shape with slightly less "Belly"

My problem with the Lava is the blade is missing more tip and the belly is too big for me taste. If small blade, than more mean a pointy, like a scalpel with the best ergo grip ;)

I find the belly is what makes the lava cut so well for a short blade, although the point does not penetrate well as some other knives like the dragonfly

The Lava needs more of a point in my mind. Lots of belly and a great design, but the blade shape could use an update. Let's try G-10/CF and a warnie. :)

Personally, I love the fat little belly on the lava. The only thing I think it could use would be maybe a quarter inch longer in the blade (there's plenty of room in the handle).

Though I think a reverse S in SE would make for an awesome lava too :D

Lava Hawkbill with G-10 handle

#13

Post by JD Spydo »

I've been thinking long and hard about what the ideal small Hawkbill would encompass. The LAVA design of our great, in house, top notch designer Chad Los Banos has been a sterling sucess. It's been a success for 2 reasons>> #1 - It's small but not too small, #2 It's handle is so ergonomically right on that even a guy with a big hand can manipulate it.

So to me it just makes good sense for Chad to go back to the drawing board and to create a Hawkbill blade for that handle. A Hawkbill Lava? You bet!!

I would like to see it available with a G-10 handle and ZDP-189 blade steel. Anyone agree?
