I used to carry thumbstud knives and then a Chive. Some of the thumbstuds were easy to open some were not. Liner locks are difficult and painful for me to close.

I went into Wal-Mart to buy a Buck Prince 503, they were sold out but there was this beautiful Spyderco Native. Well, it opened and closed very well with one hand and it looked just fantastic, a thing of beauty (like a Buck Prince).

The looks of the blade on the Delica and Endura had put me off Spydies in the past but oh this Native!

Anyway it followed me home but was too stiff and got exchanged for one with less friction in the pivot and I just love it.

Next came a Calypso Jr. ZDP, there were three to choose from and only one had the low friction in the pivot that I want. Boy does that ZDP blade cut! Like the Native the Calypso one hands like a dream.

Next there was this Ladybug 3 that needed a home. It can be one handed too but after a few thousand openings and closings the pivot is still has too much friction.

The Mini Griptilian is a very nice knife for one handing, it opens very well using it's thumb stud.

I guess the only proper thing to do is get "one of each" and spend a lot of time playing with them. But, after all, that's what they're for.

PS, the Native is big enough for these old hands to operate with comfort but still small enough to carry, it's a good choice for a first Spyder, just get one with low pivot friction. Oh yeah, that Spyder Hole can be used with either the pad of the thumb or the thumb nail equally well.

I also am always playing with, 'fondling', my knives. When watching TV I will have a :spyder: in my hand opening and closings it. My first :spyder: was an auto. I thought it was cool to push a button and see the result. Then I got hooked on 'the hole'. It's just fun, and I think a much more efficient way of opening than the other methods employed by other knife manufactures. I am hooked on 'the hole'.

would just like to thank every one for talking me into spydercos.
i am very very impressed with the two ive got ,the ukpk and tenacious.

ive owned and sold in the past sebbies and striders and other top end knives but have always expected the world and then been dissapointed after the initial new knife phase had faded.

these have been the opposite ,£30 for the tenacious and £60 for the ukpk i was not expecting alot but i feel like they are as good in almost every way as a top brand knife.

they are smooth to open ,you dont understand like an extension of the hand
until youve held the ukpk now i do!!!,they cut very very well and are built very well also.

unlike the sebbie and strider where i cannot justify using a knife that costs that much ,these make me feel like you have more than what you have paid for if that makes sense.

the only thing ive not got though yet is a spydie box so looks like ill have to buy more.

thanks baz

I can understand your logic on sebbies and striders, though I can't speak bad about strider, I do love their knives and own a SNG, (which I like very much). But both sebbies and striders are a bit over-priced IMHO... To me Spyderco is the most "well-rounded" knife company out there, you got reasonable prices, great designs, and awesome materials, not to mention outstanding customer service.. I'm glad you like the UKPK and Tenacious...If you ever handle a Caly 3 or a Milie, you will be in trouble for sure... My Caly 3 is like the alpha male of my knives.. The others just don't get as much pocket time..LOL.. Heaven forbid you ever look for a good SD folder, the Delica and Endura wave models blow any and all others away for sure.... Good luck..

I'm pretty new to knives and though I've a modest collection I've tried a few knives from the other makers too. My first Spyderco was an Endura, the first of a few Spyderco. Aesthetically, the hole may not appeal to everyone but then again beauty is in the eye of the beholder. After handling a few Spydercos I've come to the conclusion that I love the Spyderhole, especially in the small to medium sized folders. On anything too large it gets awkward for me to open. Its purely ergonomics though as my hands are pretty small. The Rookie seems to be the ideal size for me and I've one more on the way.

Though the Spyderhole may not look pretty (to some) it is very very functional. I've got a Kershaw Needs Work with the flipper function. Though I had a lot of fun popping the blade out I will probably be carrying it less often as the action makes many non-knife enthusiasts jittery. When I do carry it it is in my back pocket and I deploy it behind me only coming into their view when it's ready to be used. My Vic Cadets gets more carry time.

Thumbstuds are a hit and miss thing. I had a Buck many moons ago that worked really nicely for me and a few that gave me a sore thumb and ripped my pockets up. Recently I bought a BM Skirmish and realised their version of the hole is not for me. A good attempt by them I guess. My point is go to your local store, handle a few Spydies and see what is right for you... Not all Spydercos will feel right in your hand but there's bound to be one if you are willing to give it a chance. I've found mine and it is the Rookie. :)

Best regards

One of the things I really like abou Spyderco is the lack of preoccupation with aesthetics. They just make good knives. I must admit that I first feel in love with them after using one (and Endura III) and now I really appreciate both their performance and their design.
Top :spyder:s : Caly 3, Stretch, Millie, Manix 2, Police, Kopa, Polliwog, Meerkat, Chinook III, and SuperHawk.

Thats funny, The reason i was attracted to :spyder: s in the first place was the hole. Lucked out on that one and found a awesome company, one i have had a relationship with as a customer for **** near 15 years. :spyder:

I hate studs with a passion, every non :spyder: i own has a round hold, for me its the only way to fly. There are a few BM knives im going to get and i will look into the possibility of having them drilled for thumb holes.

I like the hole better for a couple of reasons:

1. Easier to open than a thumbstud for me
2. It won't snag on something you're trying to cut like a thumbstud can

They might look a little funny at first, but when you hold them and use them, you will understand.

Most here will tell you there is nothing (thumbstuds, AO, flipper, automatic) they prefer to a simple spyderhole. It's not because we're blind fanboys, it's because it works.
simplistic functionality..ease of deployment,ease of use..userfriendly with a sharp bite..roundhole superb!

the hole i feel does make the knife easier to open, i own a few CRKTs with thumbstuds and 2 out of 3 of them it is rather difficult to open.

also the hole does have a tendency to become a conversation piece as well.

i will admit ive never held a spydrco in my hand.

what do you guys think of the hole and blades of the spyderco range.
you really do have to hold one and use it to understand the quality and capability of the spyderco knife designs.

i like the hole and i love most spyderco blades, especially the full flat ground blades but they are all excellent
