Larger Wharncliffe Urban with a lock?

#1

Post by catamount »

I'm really liking the FFG Wharncliffe blade on my orange Urban.

I think a larger, locking version of this design would be a great addition to the lineup. What say ye?

I can definitely see that.

I'd like to see one with about a 3" cutting edge, sort of a not-so-tactical Yojimbo. Something like that would make a great working knife.

I suppose, but I'm actually thinking of a Stretch sized blade.

Thinking about it, though, it'd be quicker and easier to make a Wharnie blade for the Caly 3 than designing a new knife.

Yep, and for Stretch size, imagine Tom Krein or someone of his ilk could turn a SuperHawk into a Wharnie. Would at least work for those who can deal with handed locks.

Im thinking about getting an Urban for the more NKP friendly size (I work in an office setting). I really like the orange and was originally thinking about buying both green and orange and swapping the blades, but then thought what am I going to do with the other knife? So, Im thinking the orange w/ wharncliffe. My question is, do people think that blade style is more 'tactical' or 'aggressive' in nature?? To me it seems to be somewhat more utilitiatian in someways. I just dont want to open it up and have NKPs gape in 'horror' at the appearance of the blade. What is the true/original purpose of the wharncliffe style? Im interested in folks thoughts on this.

Why can't Sal personally make exactly what I want, right now, for a production price?!

Pneumothorax, where do you live that you'd think twice about opening any of the Urbans in public? I use my Military in public without issue and have gone to the PO, gas stations etc. with a large fixed blade on my belt, and I'm not exactly in the sticks myself.

OP, have you taken a look at the Centofante 4? It seems very close to what you'd want in a knife. It could be reground into a flat grind if that's your thing. I took a Centofante 3 flat to the stone and did just that. Cutting performance afterward was phenomenal.

I dont live anywhere abnormal (I think) - Orange County, SoCal. Im not worried about the Urban size, Im just curious about the perception/use of the wharncliffe blade style (even real history of development). I think the size is great for EDC - even in my office. I also think the orange will make it less 'threatening'. But I dont want to leave the wrong impression, Ive only had a couple people 'react' to my knives in public - most often w/ my G10 Endura. Having said that, the vast majority of people around me, neighbors, friends, even family don't get the 'knife-thing'. "why do you need (pick one or all) a) a knife that big, b) that many knives, c) to carry a knife around with all the time (always have at least Spin money clip-unless traveling), d) knives with different handles, materials, steels, blade styles, etc.

I live in Diamond bar area around Los Angeles and people gasp in horror when I use my Orange UKPK:eek :( YES AN ORANGE CUTE LOOKING LITTLE KNIFE, I can't imagine the look on their face if I take my S90V Military out). Trust me man I hear the things you said above many many times before. People just don't get it.

Hey Vivi

I sharpened my UKPK again last night, got it pretty sharp this time but still not the hair splitting sharp that I want. When do you think you can post a video on how to sharpen your UKPK.

Thanks Man :D :D :D

Until the Urban came out, my next knife was going to be the UKPK because I like the orange G10 & S30V, but a) I already have knives in the 3+" range and b) I thought a smaller blade would get less unwanted attention. Hence, the new #1 on the 'to buy' list is the Urban orange. I will be honest and say that I like the orange color and the NKP friendly factor is merely a side benefit. Even though small, has anyone had commentary on the wharncliffe style blade (doenst need to be Urban - any wharnie).

So you want a Sage with a Wharncliffe blade. Sounds like you could have someone (Tom Krien) regrind a Sage for you and have the perfect knife.

I would love another wharnclif locking folder in the line up. I think a Wharnie Caly III would be ideal, bit would also buy a locking Urban in a heartbeat.

Wow, I was gonna start a thread just like this! I'd really love a Wharncliffe Caly 3 with an orange handle. Since I love my hawkbill, I've also not stopped carrying my Centofante 4 - very usefull blade shape. I just ordered the Wharnie Urban, but I really like blades to lock, and would like it a bit larger.
On the subject of size, I would really like to see more knives the size of the Centofantes (3 & 4). That's a very useful blade and handle size - not too big and not too small.
I say yes to a larger, locking Wharnie. :D

- best wishes, Jazz.
