Paramilitary question

#1

Post by Agent Starling »

At a local knife shop I noticed the Paramilitary opens very easily...in fact, a bit too easily. A second Paramil did the same thing...to the point where I don't think I'd feel comfortable pocket-carrying it for fear of it opening.

Is this normal? I know I can tighten the pivot, but still...I've heard so much about this knife and this has not been mentioned.

Thoughts?

I would only be concerned about the knife opening in your pocket if you were carrying tip up. I've EDC'd mine (Factory tip down) constantly for the past 3 months RRP or IWB with no problems at all. I do keep my blade pivot adjusted relatively tight though.

Mine is the same way. Opens very easily. I have never had it open in my pocket though so no worries, for me anyway.

This is the common issue with compression locks. The Salsa and Lil'T used to have a ball detent that held the blade in place when closed. Sometimes I wish they bring it back to other models as well...

My Para does open easily as well. I have a custom sheath that it is often carried in so I have little concern over accidental opening. A stronger detent would be reassuring.

Nice to see you back Dialex.

I love the smooth opening of my para, and I wouldn't worry about it coming open since it only comes tip down carry. I never been a fan of the para before, till I bought one, now I EDC it everyday. I'm even wanting to get some more paras. I think it makes a great all around knife with the FFG, s30v, strong thick spine and great tip for slicing into cardboard and what not. I say get one, you'll love it.

I have a really good friend (Cody) who carried a SE Para Black Blade in is right rear pocket (RRP) while we worked together. The blade is pushed up against the side of the pocket so no worries of any accidental blade deployment. Man I miss working with Cody, but at least he's still just a phone call away. :)

The Paramil is one of those "someday" knives that I've never gotten around to buying...there has always been some more pressing knife purchase. I think I'll give this one a shot sometime soon. Besides, there are plenty of other carry knives, and this knife would suit me fine in non-carry situations.

The Superhawk has ball detent in its compression lock. It works better than my Para and my Yojimbo.

Para Millie

Funny, the para military was the first spyderco I purchased and I had the same concerns, I thought it open a little too easily. But eventually I got used to it and actually came to appreciate how easy it is to open with a simple flick of the wrist. I have carried my para millie many times and have never had problem with it opening on me, you can tighten the pivot screw and it will make it harder to open. I tried tightening the pivot screw on mine once but then put back to were it was originally. I have come to greatly appreciate the para millie, the ergos are great, the handle is nice and big and fits my hand perfectly. It is a great knife and I would highly recommend it to anybody.

For me my Para-Militarys open just about as easily as my Militarys, perhaps a bit more so. Yes, one or two seem to open a bit more easily, but not so much as to be of concern, especially since the Para-Military is tip down carry. The Para-Military is a very good investment. It's a very cool design.
