Lefties?

#1

Post by theginsu »

Why aren't the lockback models (and even some of the other lock types) made to be ambidextrious, with reversable (side to side) pocket clips? The cost of drilling three more holes on the other side couldn't be that much, and yet would make alot of left-handed people out there very happy, like me!

A number of FRN lockback models already are ambidexterous with clips that can be set up for right or left carry. I have 4 models in this configuration - Endura, Delica, Native and Matriarch. Admittedly there are a number of models that aren't as convenient for left hand carry, but at least there is a range of blade sizes and thypes that are.

The Calypso Jr. is also drilled for ambitextrous tip-down carry.

The problem with the three-screw clip style being ambidextrous is that, at least for an FRN model, you cannot simply drill and thread holes. You have to drill for threaded metal sleeves. The biggest problem would be in keeping the extra holes clean. In hard-use sitations, or even keeping the knife clipped in a pocket for long periods of time, gunk can build up in the unused holes. These are incredibly hard to get clean again. If you choose a side to put the clip on and keep it that way, it's not as big a problem, but even with effort to keep the unused holes clean, the gunk buildup detracts from the clean look of the knife.

Wise man say, forgiveness is divine. Remember that when your <img src="http://www.spyderco.com/forum/spyder.gif" border=0> bites you!

Ya know I've never understood why anyone would want a clip
diggin' into their palm while trying to use a knife. I'm a lefty
and really enjoy right hand knives because I pick uo a huge
bonus in comfort with the clip on the "wrong" side for my
left hand grip. Crazy as it sounds I won't buy a lefty knife.
don't like 'em.

Beside lefty's learn early that God gave them TWO hands to use,
so get to learnin' how to use both.

Not the SS or Micarta models, I own both. One of the main reasons for me getting an Ayoob model was that it can be setup for lefties.

Here are a few "lefty" models to consider:

1. Endura
2. Delica
3. Rescue
4. Goddard
5. Native
6. Merlin
7. Salsa
8. Meercat
9. Lil' Temperance

There are probably more models available, but these are just a few that I thought of.

I Like the small stainless models. They are all set up for right-hand carry, except the mouse. I usually carry in my right pocket, and play with it in my right hand, but when it comes time to use (cut) it, I have to switch it to my left hand. Can't seem to control it with my right.

Take a look at the Native SS. Just like the FRN model, it has a clip that can be reversed for left-hand carry
