Para D2 or S30V

#1

Post by ccpmedic »

I am considering a Paramilitary. I currently EDC a Delica. I have carried larger knives in the past, but I am more interested in a blade steel other thak VG10. Don't get me wrong, VG10 is great. What do suggest and why? (edge retention, easy to sharpen , corrision resistance, etc.)
Thanks for your opinions...Roy

If you really like your Delica, I suggest a ZDP-189 Delica. That stuff is amazing!

I second that. The Para is one of Spydercos best IMO, but if it's blade steel your after you can get a ZDP189 Endura or Delic and send it to Tom Krein for a full flat grind and still come out spending less than you would on the S30V Para. There's also the CPMD2 Para, M4 Mule and S90V Military to play around with. :D

S30V has large grains and likes to micro chip, D2 is fine grain, tough as heck and will last longer than you can imagine....

On the other hand D2 will rust much easier and S30V will sustain harsher environment. I would definitely go with S30V (already have one) because it takes a killer edge and keeps it that way for some time without worry of rust.
my 2 cents

How'd you microchip the ZDP blade? Can you describe how they looked too?

Very minor chips from light scraping. I now have an Atwood Gasbaby EDC for scraping abd prying.

I don't recall. I try not to abuse a knife, probably a label or paint chip off of something. I wish I could be of more help.
