Lava Sprint Run

#1

Post by Lev »

The Lava is my favorite small-sized Spydie, and is typically what I find in my pocket most of the time. But I've mentioned before, I'm not a big fan of stainless handles. Though I know it has recently been discontinued, I hope it finds its way on a Sprint Run list in the near future. I'm really fond of the two custom Lava's I found in the link below.

Last I heard Spyderco was working on another Lava, one with a larger blade too. Maybe a search on Casual Bombshell thread will come up with something.

Hey Lev,

Those two might be mine :D :p

Tricod did those for me and they are magnificent. I too love the Lavas and thus I asked him to pimp these up for me. One in Foliage Green Micarta, and the other in Burgundy Micarta. Both with low riding wireclips. I believe I have pics of those somewhere in the forums here.

A "Maxi Lava" is in the works with Spyderco I believe and it may be a G10 version. I am hoping that it will be out in PE as well as SE and if it comes with a wireclip that'd be awesome too. A black bladed version would also be nice if it was considered, but for the purposes of financial viability I think Spyderco are already doing us all a favour by having the Lava in their lineup. Current model is discontinued for 2009 :( as it is not as huge a seller as is required for it to be continued in production.

I love my Lavas :D That's why I 'only' have about 4-5 of them :D

Datan,

Yeah those be the ones. Outstanding! If you don't mind my asking, how much did it run you to pimp those up?

I'll admit, I'm quite envious. I had been wondering what one would look like with different handle scales. I think I should get another before they disappear :)

Hey Lev,

A few master pimpers will be able to do this sorta treatment for you. The two most prominent in this forum are the lovely Tricod and STR :D

I reckon both will be able to help you out if you ask. Dependent on workload and what they are concentrating on currently I'd say for pricing you should ask them directly. As a rule of thumb for the Lava I spent around twice the normal street price on a pimped Lava. That might change with the pimpers commitments and their current direction as well as price fluctuations.

Those who say the S/S is slippery would be 'slightly wonrg' in the ascertations. The excellent grip provided by the handle shape and choils almost negates the discussion about 'grippiness' of the handle material. However, the 'grippiness' is slightly increased with the micarta. I believe someone else in here has a Lava pimped out in linerless G10.

My micarta ones were fully lined with wireclips. Weight reduction wasn't too much, but a linerless G10 version would be appreciably lighter.

Let us know how you go with your quest to pimp this now disco'd item. Sad days for a lot of us Lava fans.

Aloha guys,

And thanks lev for starting this up again. ;)

I would agree with Tank regarding an FRN model. However, I think that might cost Sal a few "cents" more than G10 would due to the molding and such...shoot, even one of them Etched handles on the Lava would be great and IMHO, would totally "fit the name" of the knife!

God bless you guys, and like I said...

Thanks for the info. Now I just need to pick up another one. Not the best time of year to be thinking about myself. But...

Yeah, if I choose to go that route I'll definitely let you know.

I'll probably post a comment about a Lava Sprint Run from time to time. Sooner or later, we're bound to see one.

Thanks again

I would go for any new version of the Lava.

There has been some talk of the "Maxi-Lava".

A little bit bigger, Closer to the original specs. Possibly with G10

A Etched Lava would be great. That would be one purrdy knife.

Hey Cousin Chad :)

How's it going bro. Hope you've been practising your throwing arm mate :D :p

I really hope that we do get the Maxi Lava cos I've been blowing this trumpet for at least 1 year now. If we do see the Maxi Lava I hope it'll be with G10/ micarta and PE as well as SE. PE is morelikely for the blade shape but a full SE would be a welcome addition to the family for sure.

Not sure about the etched version myself. I've had the etched D'Fly and found no significant difference in 'feel', looks different certainly. I just think the Lava deserves better 'clothing' than just etched handles, especially as everyone has had their concerns over the S/S handles.

Fingers crossed, let's hope Sal will surprise us in '09 or '10 ;)

I believe slightly larger Lava with lighter scales could be the flagship of spyderco's little big knife series.

Personally I think the current Lava is perfect. I like the stainless handles, but I seem to be in the minority, I like the heft they add to the knife. Also I hope they don't make the next one any bigger, it's perfect size right now.

I agree. The current size is perfect. It fits in your hand like it supposed to be there. And it's almost invisible to anyone around. Brilliant. Thanks Chad

I'm in for one FRN/G10/Micarta/CF, PE Lava sprint run. SE I won't buy, I don't like convex bellied SE blades.

I agree a G10 or FRN Lava would be sweet, but are we barking up the wrong tree since the knife is discontinued and designed by someone else other than Spyderco ? im just wondering of the odds of this ever happening

If it was approved by Spyderco, they would simply see if the designer was interested in doing another. Considering Chad already voiced he was into it, then it just depends on if it makes sense for Spyderco. :)
