A Spyderco Golden OLDIE: The RENEGADE

One of the very first Spyders that I seriously and religiously EDCed for a long time was the RENEGADE model. The Renegade I had was a Seki City made Spyder that was a combo edged, ATS-34 blade. I later discovered that the Renegade and Blackhawk models both were also made in Golden Colorado USA as well. The RENEGADE & BLACKHAWK were 2 of the very, very few Spyders that were made in Japan and the USA facility both.

It was early 01 when I won it on Ebay and first started carrying it. I later traded that knife to a BLADEFORUMS brother and I ended up missing it so much that I ended up trading the brother another knife to get it back. There was only one other Spyder that I went out of my way to trade to get it back. But there was something very special and intriguing about the Renegade model that has still stuck with me over time. Very few of the 1990s era Spyders hooked me like the RENEGADE did :cool:

I later got it's little brother the BLACKHAWK model which was pretty much just a RENEGADE with a proportionately shorter blade. I hear very little talk on this Forum about the RENEGADE or the BLACKHAWK either one. It's high time we do some serious talk about the RENEGADE and it's little brother. Those are 2 hall of fame, 1990's era Spyder gems to be sure. Let's hear what you all have to say about the RENEGADE.

The RENEGADE in CPM-D2 or CPM S90V. That blade design would be a great candidate for ZDP-189 That blade design is just timeless in my opinion. But that's just another case and point that Spyderco has always ahead of their time.

Very nicely proportioned blade, great old school style G10 handles and very smooth opening action and a very solid lock.

I liked it a lot, but a Spyderco brother was looking for one badly for his collection and thus I gave it up to him :D

I'd love to see a sprint run at some point. I rather doubt it will happen due to tooling reasons, but I'd love to see it nonetheless.

I had a Blackhawk for a short while about 8 or 9 years ago and let it go to get a Military. I can't say I regret that, because it started my on again/off again love affair with Militaries, but I do sometimes want one back.

Two reasons that I didn't care for it as much were the scale contours and the pocket clip. Get rid of the asymmetrical scales. I know it may have felt a big better in your right hand, but it would get me confused that it was a liner lock with the cutout. The pocket clip just didn't seem to flow real well with the design like most do.

If we're taking votes, I'd like a Renegade rather than a Blackhawk. I'd love one with VG-10 steel, hollow ground a bit higher than the old one and give it lined symmetrical G-10 scales. Throw on a E4/D4 clip and I think you'd have a winner.

The really early USA made Renegades and Blackhawks had aluminum handles. We marketed them to the biker industry and they did well there.

I don't believe I've ever seen one in Aluminum. I'm not much of a collector, but that would be neat to see. Did it have the asymmetrical handles like on the G-10 version?

What really blows my mind about this "Renegade" is the vast similarities between it and the newly proposed "Native Chief" that we currently have a thread on. I urge all of you to go to that thread and tell me if they aren't from the same group of blade styles :cool:

AS I said earlier it truly was a design way ahead of it's time when you consider all of the other models had in their line during the era of the mid to late 90s.

If this isn't a candidate for a sprint run with a newer blade steel then I don't know which model would be.

I have some fond memories of my EDC days with my Renegade. That blade design as well as it's little brother the Blackhawk are very functional to say the least. JD :spyder: O

Love my Renegade. The 3rd :spyder: I purchased. A Golden made one. Fell in love with the shape of the blade. One of my favorite :spyder: knives.
