Sounds like a no brainer, but the names suggested do not fit with the naming theme the spydercrew has going for their H1 line. Perhaps Bering Salt would be more appropriate. Keeps with the whole naming after bodies of water thing they got going.

I would also be down for a new color. Perhaps bright green???

I really hope the guys & gals at :spyder: can make this happen,I really want a spyderhawk in general, but it's too bad they are discontinued.

If this H1 spyderhawk is made,I will buy 5 of them,2 black PE & SE,2 yellow PE & SE and one black SE for a EDC.

Nice collection, BTW!!

I'm not a big fan of hawkbills, but I AM a steel junky. ;) The Harpy and SpyderHawk are VG-10, The Merlins are G-2 and ATS-55, and we're asking for H-1. I suppose a Tasman Salt would do for testing that steel in this application, but my hands are large enough that I prefer the Endura handle to the Delica handle.

You are definitely right here. I was thinking along the lines of Harpy and Merlin (both raptors) and thought Osprey because they are fish hawks and I see them often fishing along the beaches where I surf. But, the other Salts are mostly named after large bodies of water (Tasman Sea, Caspian Sea, Atlantic, Pacific). But then again, there is the Salt I, Rock Salt and Saver Salt, so...

Either way, I am sooo pumped about this possibility! Really Sal and crew, the Tasman NEEDS a big brother. It's just not fair that the Salt I and Saver Salt both have them. Even the Caspian has different varieties and the Rock Salt...well that's just one badass mofo and don't need no stinking company. The poor little Tasman though, really NEEDS some H1 hawkie company!!

I am not one to beg for anything, but PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE do this one!

Thanks, Billy!

If Changing the blade steel to H-1 and adding yellow will keep the collectors at bay :p , then I'll drop me request for the Rescue handle and reverse-S.

Hey Sal, this thread is building pretty quickly (hint, hint).

Again Billy for the record I truly do like that name "Osprey" This would essentially kill 3 birds with one stone>>

Consider you'll have a new addition in the successful SALT series. You'll have a newer/different Hawkbill to keep that set of fans happy >> and this will be a way to put H-1 Steel to an ultimate test ( which I have no doubt that it will pass ;) )

Not to mention that if this model would go over big in the fishing/maritime industries just think of the fanfare that could generate over the next 3 years or so

And will it ever be a most beautiful tackle box companion for my yellow Tasman and Catcherman. Fishing will never be the same :D

Thank you sir! I appreciate your endorsement.

To expound on my choice a bit more - Ospreys are medium/large sized raptors that are incredibly regal in their bearing (aren't all raptors though?) and are amazing fishers. I love to watch them hunt along the ocean shorelines here in South Florida because there are no obstructions to the view unlike watching them on inland waterways. Their power, grace, agility and accuracy are just awe-inspiring, as well as their adaptability. Other than turkey and black vultures, these guys are the most visible raptors we have here in urban South Florida.

So I really think that the name Osprey would be fitting for a knife that will be a medium/large size, have the arcing grace and pinpoint accuracy of a fine-tipped hawkbill shape, the speed and agility of lightweight, linerless FRN and of course, the power and adaptability of H1 steel.

Wow, I can almost see it written up as the knife description in the 09 or 10 Spyderco catalog... :D

I can just see the ads in BLADE & Tactical Knives magazines now

You'll have a scene of an Osprey diving low to grab a small salmon but his talons will be an H-1 Spyderhawk on both sides.

Or you could have an Osprey and his mate on their nest of chicks while mom & dad are ripping apart their catch with an H-1 Spyderhawk. :D

Or you could have 2 bald eagles ganging up on a lone Osprey and all of a sudden he whips out his H-1 Spyderhawk and the eagles take off

I love it JD!!

Here's some fluff copy to go with it

"The mighty Osprey is a world class fisherman in both fresh and salt water environs. It's power, grace and beauty are unparalleled in the animal kingdom. In Spyderco's newest addition to their popular Salt series of knives, we have taken all those attributes that make the Osprey a successful and adaptable bird and rolled them into the perfect package for anyone in need of a powerful, adaptable knife. With it's long, arcing hawkbill blade shape made of rustproof H1 steel and it's linerless, lightweight FRN handles, the all-new Osprey Salt is ready for the beaches, the piers, fishing boats, rainforests or just your backyard."

If I hadn't just spent my entire knife budget, I'd say I could get one. In about six months or so I'll be able to afford more knives.
I guess since these things usually take time to cook, six months shouldn't be a problem. I'm in.

By the way. One of the knives I bought recently was a Tazman Salt, it would be nice to have a bigger one.

Agent Starling
What caliber is best for Mushroom Hunting? I'd imagine using a 12-gauge would be rather.....messy.... I'd imagine a .22 or .17 HMR would be better, as long as there's no risk of *wounding* the mushroom, nothing's more dangerous than a wounded mushroom.....

At least they'd be easy to stalk/track, and you don't have to worry about them running too far after they've been shot ;)

what Spydie would be best for field-dressing them?

H-1 Spyderhawk: green light

#57

Post by JD Spydo »

Well I'm officially fully committed to this proposal for an H-1 Spyderhawk. This blade will be ideal for a wide array of cutting chores.

I'm not seeing hardly any opposition to it either ;)

I would love a Mike Sastre sheath for it as well.

I hope brother Ghostrider will design a really nice, sturdy lanyard for it.

The course is laid out so let's set sail shall we

ITS SO EXCITING TO SEE SO MUCH ENTHUSIASM FOR AN H1 SUPERHAWK!!!! :D

i remember the last time the name "osprey salt" was suggested... about 3 years ago... (for what's now known as the tasman), sal mentioned that there might be confusion resulting from the fact that al mar had an osprey knife.

billy... your mention of docks and rain forests sounds right in line with my lifestyle... love the description!!!!!

and i think slice started the 2009 H1 Spyderhawk sig line...

caught some nice winter sole off of the docks today... removed heads and guts with my salt I SE (3-4 years old now!), but reflected on how much more fun it might have been with a big hawkbill... :D
