Curiously, every time someone asks me for a knife and I hand them over one of my more"utilitarian" spydies they compliment me on the quality and look which is always nice But...then they nag me for 2 weeks to sell it to them.
Usually I am able to send them to the store, but in a few cases I gave in,which is another excuse to buy 2 new spydies :one to replace it and a new one for the collection (I never sell cheap).

My first Spyderco was a Delica. I have been carrying it for 8 years now and I have no problem loaning it, but I have never been asked by anyone I couldn't trust. I just got a new Native on Friday and I don't think I would be comfortable loaning it out, even to those I turst, so I have been carrying a spare to work to loan if someone asks. If someone wanted to borrow a knife long term, like for a day of hiking or hunting, or any activity where I would not be present, then I have plenty of cheap knives to loan out. I do like to show my Spydercos off to my friends and I will hand them any knife I own to look at.

I no longer will lend out a Spydie (or any of my quality blades by other companies either). Years ago a friend asked to use my Delica so I handed it to him. He proceeded to walk over to a wooden support column and was going to try to "cut through it." Luckily I got it away from him before he could start chopping with it.

It's unbelievable how adults can behave around a knife. They either have an illogical fear of it, or they think the smallest folder should be able to chop down a forest. Of course, it's not their money if my knife's broken (although I would have made it clear if they broke it they bought it). If they need a blade and I can't cut it for them myself, I will open up my Leatherman Pulse's knife blade and hand that to them. Same rules.

Will I lend out a knife? Sure, under the following conditions:

1) First and foremost, you must be responsible with a knife. If you fail here, no knife for you.
2) You must be reasonably proficient. In other words, if you cut yourself, it's your problem.
3) You must understand the "you break it, you replace it" rule. If you break one of my knives, I will want a replacement, in a reasonable time frame.

3a) You must also understand the "Arkansas Guarantee" rule. In short, if you break it, you keep both pieces. You must then replace it.

Keepin' it real...real sharp, that is.

Would you lend out your wife or girlfriend?

Seriously, there would only be two chances: "very slim" and "none." That's why I usually carry two knives--one for my exclusive use and one to lend out (in the above two chances).

I think of my knifes as firearms, so if someone ask to use it the answer is no for 99.9% of time. Actually the only person I trust is my 14 year old son, he knife-wise. I gave him a SS/SE Endura after trusting him with lower brand knifes.

Sure, i do it all the time. We build all kinds of crap in my friend's basement, and he doesn't carry a knife. so he's always using my dragonfly (my only spyder) for crap like scraping off hot glue or JB weld or cutting electrical tape or cutting rope or just anything general like that. so what if he hurts himself on it? that's his problem.

knives are meant to be used, right?

but then again, because of all the use my blade is NEVER sharp... oh well.

I have to adree with Spyderholic. Most anyone you lend a quality piece of cutlery to is going to mutilate themselves. Just look at the situation and use your own judgement, your own tool. No one knows it better than you. In short, NO, I would not lend out my Spyder.

I ask them to first answer a few simple questions before handling my cutting instruments:
1. Who is Sal Glesser and what does he have to do with this knife?
2. What is the MSRP of this knife?
3. Do you know the name of the locking mechanism and how to properly open and close it?
4. Are you going to do something stupid with this knife, like run your thumb over the edge or flick it out and try to scare me or someone else?
5. What do you want to cut?
6. Will you repay me if you **** up my knife?

I think clipteer has the ultimate answer to this one. Matter of fact, I have an experience to share regarding a renegade I once owned. My friend asked to see my knife, and in trust, I let him. So he opens it (over a tile floor mind you) and lunges at me. I was already against a wall and couldn't move to avert the penetration of the blade. So, with a wince-because this friend o' mine is missing a few screws- I closed my eyes and waited for the new piercing I was about to recieve. At the sound of laughter I looked up to see that my knife had been dropped to the tile when he made the move in hopes of scaring the s**t out of me. He had successfully broken off the tip. But that's ok. I made sure he was SORRY for that. So perhaps this quiz would serve well for those who would lend out their beloved
