How can people take such awful care of such expensive knives?

How can people take such awful care of such expensive knives?

Someone just gave me a Case 31048 (not sure of the name of the pattern) in CV with the blade covered in rust and the tip broken off. They even managed to break the liner, because the blade doesn't even have that characteristic Case "snap" when it opens and closes. I removed all the rust I could, but the blade is still pitted and still fairly dull after sharpening it. I mean, this is a $30 knife, and someone just broke the tip off and threw it in a drawer and ruined the edge. This makes me mad, even if I did get a free knife out of it.

Yes, to see a misused/abused knife seems to just take the heart out of me.

I once had a friend that threw a Schrade 340T Stockman at a tree and busted off the first 1/4" inch of the clip blade. After it happened, he just walked over and dusted it off and acted like nothing had happenend. I was ready to cry! (Or strangle him<img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>) but the point is, some folks just don't give a dang what happens to their knives. I tell myself that they just don't know any better, but it still hurts to see a good knife go to waste......<img src="sad.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

I'd hate to see that happen to my brand new Endura.

On the other hand, that's why I have several throwing knives. They are cheap, they are durable (well... relatively) and they are made for exactly the purpouse of being thrown.

And walking toward someone while juggling three of them really makes people walk backwards very fast! ;-)

That does make you <i>cringe</i> after a while, doesn't it? I'd be curious as to how they broke the liner without breaking the handle slabs. It seems that both would crack at the same time.

Good luck cleaning it up. Maybe with a little time and patience you can get the blade sharp and the tip reground to something useful.

Keepin' it real...real sharp, that is.

my EDC harpy looks like a totally different knife now, in fact when i put it next to my other harpy (NIB) they do look like different knives, the top cm of tip is missing so from where the serrations end to the tip its a perfectly flat edge like a mini straight razor, and the blade is so messed up its half flatground, the handle is polished to the point of seeing yourself in it, the spine of the blade curls in on itself like on the calypso jr, etc etc. still love it like a son tho...

Wow, people are kind of frightening with knives, aren't they? One thing I always had to teach mutiple times in knife safety classes is this:

The steel is stainless. Break the word in half. Stain<b>LESS</b>! In other words, yes, it will rust. It just stains less than straight carbon steel.

Due to the fact that I will not carry it on a regular basis, I ground the tip at about a 10 degree angle and now it's like a chisel, with the broken-off tip just as sharp as the rest of the blade. (not that I'm stupid enough to use a knife as a chisel) I also dug out an old fine-grit EZ Lap Diamond stone and ground the rest of the blade down to a 5 degree angle and touched it up on an Arkansas benchstone, which produced a <b>very </b> sharp edge. Actually, it's so sharp that the side of the edge doesn't even reflect light! (only where it's ground) The liner isn't broken, it's just messed up in that there is no resistance in opening or closing the knife, but somehow the blade manages to stay closed. Now I would hesistate to carry it in my pocket, because the blade comes open so easily and that tip with the sharpened edge actually sits above the liner when fully closed. The only knives I don't mind seeing abused are those cheap POS knives. (like VampyreWolf onece said, they make great tent stakes! <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> )
