I tried to enlist in the Army back in 1987, but failed the physical; they said my eyesight didn't meet the requirements for a combat MOS.

So I joined the Department of Corrections, became a CERT sniper, did crazy things, participated in many battles and such. But never in the military, unfortunately.

I salute all of you who served or are serving!

hi there,

I did my 24 months in the RNAF(Royal Netherlands Airforce), from 1978-1979.
I was a crewchief in the 315 Squadron which was flying the Northrop NF5.
I had a great time loved those fighters. ;)

regards,

Werner

I'm a little hesitant to get any real info from recruiters, I've heard about some of the tricks they've pulled on people. What's the catch?

Is it generally the case that most serve for fairly short terms in the US military? I've been a little bit surprised by the number of posters serving 2-5 years but not many serving longer.

The trick is, get it in writing. Get that writing signed and notarized. If you don't have it in writing with the recruiters signature, you don't have it.

With that said, once you've demonstrated that you know how the game is played and you aren't falling for any ruse he throws out, recruiters can be very helpful. The Navy has some great programs available. But unless things have changed since I was in, you only get one guarantee. When I enlisted, I was guaranteed Nuclear Power training in writing. I was promised Electronics Technician training verbally. I got the Nuclear Power training...right after Propulsion Engineering "A" School (for Machinist Mate rating). I didn't get the ET training in writing, so I didn't get it.

Sam, we all serve six years at least, whether we know it or not. A lot of folks serve two or three years active, and the remainder inactive reserve. Things would have to get pretty desperate for the government to call up the inactive reserves, but they could do it if they had to. I served my six active, with no inactive reserve time.
I don't believe in safe queens, only in pre-need replacements.

There was supposed to be an 07 at the end lol, and that was just my Boot Ship date, so service time has been less than a year. I enjoy getting to be little kid again but it has its ups and downs, living in married housing has been a blessing but much more expensive. Its getting a little easier to juggle marriage, the marine corps, and my life, its a daily struggle! But, I dont regret it!

I figured that's what it was. :) It couldn't have been your real time in service because you'd be at Parris Island, or Pendleton? I forget which is the boot camp for you hollywood marines, the ones that get issued Ray bans and Nikes and stuff :D So I hear anyway. :)

Your MOS. Is that infantry? I never learned the marine ones, just army. Joe
