The all damascus Ed Schempp Mini Persian prototype is one of the coolest things I've ever seen in my life! I don't know what to say. OMG! The twisted bugs in the blade steel....that handle....wow! :D :D :D A truly amazing work of art. Is it the only one of its kind? WOW! Thank you for sharing photos of this, Deacon.

This is “The Persian Army” thread, so inflating the numbers is fine for the sake of domination

I always thought that your Persian with stag jigged bone scales is by far the best of the bunch, closely following by ironwood one.
None of the new prototypes changed it. I was hoping that Sal and Ed would consider jigged bone, but it looks like it’s not going to happen.
I kind of like green scales but they do not come close to the jigged bone IMHO.
Thank you for the pics!
WhyNot.

Paul,
Sorry I didn't get the chance to thank you for your posing of the Persian Clock for my own selfish and wanton needs :D Great job on the setup might I say :) I can now tell the 'time' with both your Kopa and the Persian time-pieces !
I have to admit that when they are group as such, the character of the Persian is quite a bit more colourful and surprisingly less grating than when viewed in isolation. Please take that comment as being insulting to the product from Sal or Ed. It's just that in isolation the 'other' Persians just don't look as classy as the original. Different for sure, elegant for sure, but it still is NOT the one that either we all have gotten used to or it just feels 'wrong'.
BUT, when seen in what looks like a planned kaleidoscope and palette of colours in a group shot, they all start to work in harmony. Much like any diverse group of characters, they all seem to work together. It then has made me re-think what the Persian is about, or rather, what it COULD BE ???
I am exciting and a bit apprehensive as to the upcoming selection of a scale material, and its colour and character.
I have personally got my own legion of the Persian Army, and have some customisation in the process. But engraving of bolsters such as the Marcus Hunt one has fascinated me for a long time.... as has the Krein FFG and damascus versions from your website and as pictured here. I must procure more Persians to indulge in my fascination over this particular big and small model. I think some future engraving is in order. Thank you for highlighting the deficiencies in my diet :p
As for Spyderco's choice for scale selection in a sprint. I think economically speaking it would be most prudent to choose a nice classic scale that the public will not be too polarised with as well as be economical to produce in fairly consistent fashion. At the same time it has to look good and perform well (I do use my Persians :D ). A scale such as the Cocobolo would marry up nicely enough with Persians and also it has been used on other Spyderco products in the past (Kopa, 25th Anniversary Delica box, WTC box etc.). So a sub-collector of Cocobolo can also have some fun. It is also an easy enough material to source and work with.
Hurray for Persians... as Henning has said in thie thread, we need 300 Persians to join this thread so keep up the posting !

This is the primary reason why I think that we need more than just one Sprint run.datan wrote: I have to admit that when they are group as such, the character of the Persian is quite a bit more colourful and surprisingly less grating than when viewed in isolation.

Are you trying to send me broke !
I'll take it one at a time. The Persian is a very sacred object to me, so special in fact that I think if more than 1 variation is sprinted, I may have a heart attack. I think that my body and soul will be ripped apart in trying to divide my attention between the many Persian variations.
I say that even though I might love all and any variations, possibly the best way to keep this one special is by limiting exposure .... over-exposure kills people as well as knives
Who am I kidding !..... I will end up buying all variations if they are released :D
I think an ETA of 2 years is reasonable enough :p
Cheers

Do not worry. You will be OK and even better. I suggested only one at one time (one every year) like Kopas, Kiwis, Sage, Micro-dyad and so on.
Let's run Cocobolo in 2009, Stag in 2010 and so on :D :D :D :p :p :p

Looking good, i think the Cocobolo one would be a winner! (But if i was to choose, it would be linen micarta in that slightly offwhite color)
I am with you 100% on both counts

The C83 Persian was first released in November 2003. It was one model I jumped on right away.MCM wrote:How about a little history on the Large version.
Yrs produced / production numbers / variations made etc.
The small version is a regular production knife correct?
Is it a "new" release?
Just looking for some info as I begin the hunt for the Large model..............
Thanks!
There was really only one configuration made. Blade was plain edged, hollow ground VG-10, scales were black micarta, and handle was drilled for RH tip up carry only. However, within that, collectors define two minor variants. The orginal version had Ed Schempp's "sheaf of wheat" logo on the left side of the blade. Some time later, I believe in late 2005, that changed. Ed's logo got moved to the right side of the blade, and the Spyderco :spyder: replaced it on the left side. It was dropped from the lineup in late 2006.

The C105 Persian 75mm was released in November of 2005 and is still in production. As with its larger brother, there has only been one configuration, plain edged, hollow ground VG-10 with black micarta scales. Unlike it's big brother, it has always had the :spyder: on the left side of the blade and Ed's logo on the right.
No idea of production quantities on either.
