prawning....

#1

Post by sam the man.. »

Folks ~ This is totally off-topic. Have you heard of people reeling in prawns at the end of their fishing lines? Well, I would like to share a phenomenon which is known as prawning.. Here in Malaysia, we are blessed with plenty of interesting tropical aquatic life. One of the best known ultra-light fishing in our rivers is known as "prawning". Using light poundage lines (6-8lbs), we rig a running sinker to land the prawns. Barbless hooks (size 7-12) are used in this process. For bait, bloodworms, earthworms and live guppies are used. Prawning is no walk in the park. You've got to hook the crustacean's soft mandible and slowly reel it in in a "Tai-Chi" like motion. If you set your hook, you are likely to loose your catch..

On the dining table, the Giant River Prawn (freshwater) or genus Macrobrachium Rosenbergii are found throughout Southeast Asia. These succulent crustaceans are well-known as delicacies in Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand. The Thai specialises in "Tom Yam Kung" or spicy prawn soup, while back here, the prawns are barbequeued or steamed with ginger and Chinese wine. The best time to fish is from Feb-June. Our giants can grow up to 500gm with its blue pincers measuring up to 3-feet oal.. So, where does the fit in? Well, I used my Spyderco C-17 Catcherman to dress the prawns. The 75-25 edge is perfect in removing the prawn's soft shell and legs..

Why am I suddenly feeling hungry?

Samo-man, great information, wow! Those creatures look like something I ate in the State of Veracruz next to the Gulf of Mexico. We call them "Langostinos" (small lobster) or "Camaron de Rio" (river shrimp) Quite tasty! I must try the Asian type! *drooling*

With wine, candles, next to the sea... ah... *dreaming Asian dreams*

Howdy Kirath welcome aboard the forums! Yeah Kahz! Those bugs are mean-looking and they taste really awesome.. The large ones have medium-textured flesh, they're like crawfish or lobsters! Back here in Malaysia, we have "prawn-season" that's when my Spydie goes into action!

Hmm cats, yeah, we have Giants over here known as ikan Tapah [ee-can't tar`par] or genus wallago attu.. They can grow up to 5 feet weighing about 300Ibs.. They love to run deep and fast... Other cats known as baung [bou`ng] which is an excellent table fish, poses a good challenge on light tackle..

Mmmmm, food is one of my favorite subjects!

Nice pics of those delicious prawns, Samo! Being of Filipino decent, I can really appreciate what you are talking about. My Mom makes a coconut curry shrimp that is incredible over some freshly steamed white rice. Yummmmy!

When I visited the Philippines back in '84, I couldn't resist trying the coconut curry prawn @ a restaurant called Josephine's. (They have their own fish/prawn farm.) Let me say that those prawn are large enough to scare away some of our Florida lobster! Definitely no comparison in size to the shrimp we catch here.

*jealous of your prawn season*

Best wishes to you Samo, hope the leg is healing well.

Samo,
Ahh....now you are talking up my ally. Heh heh! I looovve seafood! Although I'm probably not considered a 'die-hard' fisherman, I too love to eat what I catch. (If the fish are biting that is!) Nice pic's! It looks like a lot of fun!

LOL, Samo!

You know, "beans" have to go with the meal, mainly because "beans are the musical fruit..." Heh heh! Just teasin'.
The term "Cool Beans" is a Northern Indiana slang for "Sweet!". However, shrimp and beans might not taste too bad after all...

Samo, popcorn shrimp are little shrimp about the size of, well, popcorn. They make great munchies when fried.
