I've also been thinking about getting one the ultra fines. So far I have been able to convince myself that stropping the blade is just as good. But, the rods look like they would be easier than stropping. Plus, I'm usually too lazy to strop :o

I think they are well worth the price. I can get my knives to whittle hair on the UF. I can't get them to do that on the Fine.
I posted this before but it never hurts to have visuals. =P

Its free hanging. Just like the videos you can see on youtube. It takes a few tries just with the UF rods, but it can still do it. Now, after the UF rods, and a few passes on a loaded strop, it almost always gets it on the first try.
So I think people should invest into the UF rods. ^_^

+1 on this. The UF rods with a loaded leather strop will produce an unbelievably sharp edge. In my exerience, far better than even the factory edge. Definitely worth the investment.krazichinaman wrote:Its free hanging. Just like the videos you can see on youtube. It takes a few tries just with the UF rods, but it can still do it. Yes, the UF stones are well worth it. The regular white stones will make a knife plenty sharp, but the knifeknut wants more. The UF stones are just the stuff for knifeknuts, it supercharges the edge noticeably. I noticed a significant step up in sharpness after my first try with the UF stones.

So, the hair whittling and anti-stropping comments (from Cliff on the VG-10 sharpening thread) have driven me to purchase a UF rod. I only bought one rod 'cause I'm cheap and because with the UF rod I'm not going to be jumping constantly from side to side like I need to with the other rods. One rod costs $17, but I figure it will last a lifetime, so it is money well spent.
I like the UF rod. It does a nice job of removing that pesky burr. I think using the UF rod is much easier and more consistent than stropping. Maybe I'm just uncoordinated, but I find it very easy to ruin my edge by stropping incorrectly. The rod eliminates that problem for me.
Another plus is that the UF rod makes deburring the Spyder-edge painless.
Removing the little burr after sharpening is the one thing that has been has kept me from really having shaving sharp blades. I thought at first that using the UF rod would take the sharpened edge too far and leave me with a thin delicate edge that was prone to dulling. In actuality, by removing the burr, I think the rod leaves me with a more robust edge. I can only imagine that by having a burr on the edge, that can eventually break off, would hasten the dulling of my edges. I envision the burr to be this lever arm which snaps off when loaded as you make that first cut; leaving up with a fall dull edge.
So, yes the UF rod is worth it for me. Thanks Spyderco for another product I can't do without.

Jim, You made a great choice and i agree with everybody that we are Spydie knife nuts and we want our knifes as sharp if not sharper than they are after we are done sharping them. But do your self a favor and when you can afford it get another uf rod so that you have two rods instead of one. It will work out better with that combination

Henry,
I may have given the impression that I am not using the UF rod on both sides. I am. Since the UF rod only needs to be used for a couple of strokes, it's no big deal to flip the stone to the other hole.

Yes. Marked increase in slicing ability if that"s what you're after.BuffaloBill wrote:are they worth the investment? and is it a noticeable difference from ultra fine and fine?

Get the diamond rods too, it makes reprofiling so much easier, plus you're reprofiling at the exact same angle as you will be sharpening afterwards.
