who doesn't hate the CE?

From all the posts that I read it seems a lot of people don't care for the combo-edge configuration on their :spyder: knives. I've used PE and SE styles before and they worked great, but once I discovered the CE I haven't looked back. I see the CE as basically a plain edge that has extra cutting ability and edge holding.. My first CE was a D3 I bought when they first came out. I used it for work and home repair as I had just bought an old house shortly after purchasing the knife. I used the plain section of the knife for a number of different things, but it eventually got dull. At work, there would be times my knife was dull, but still had to cut things such as cardboard or carpet. Even though the plain section (and serrated section) were really dull, the serrated portion would cut whatever I needed, sharp or not. This is why I'm such a big CE fan, you get the best of both edge types. I would say that PE is more useful, but I like having the serrations at the base of the blade for extra edge retention and cutting rough or fibrous materials. I have to ask myself now, is there anyone who finds an advantage in the CE? I'd love to hear anyones opinions.

On a side note, I also like how spyderco offers the PE, CE and SE on a lot of their knives. Most other companies offer only the PE or maybe CE. I guess it's nice to have more options when buying a knife!

I don't hate CE; it is merely my least favorite edge type.

I don't see it as "you get the best of both edge types," rather, I feel it doesn't really give you enough of either edge type to be useful.

I prefer to have my "CE" in the form of a Dyad.

all my knives are combination edge. i dont think i'd ever buy a knife that was strictly plain edge. i am considering adding a spyderedge'd knife to my collection, though.

I don't hate CE blades at all, I have a few. I think it is best served on the larger knives especially the Endura

My experience with CE has been that on smaller bladed knives, like has been mentioned. You don't get enough of either edge type to make a consistent cut. On some large blade knives it's not an issue. It depends on the knife IMO. Personal preference too.

Hate is a strong word. Least preferred is probably better. Collectors, or rahter, knives with collector value seem to have the PE as the favoured variant. The knives I have are mostly PE as I use that edge most for the types of cuts I do. However, the SE is not lost on me. I have a fair few in CE and SE configs. The serrated Spyderedge really cuts like a hot knife thru butter :p

As I usually manage to get 2 or more knives on my person I usually have a PE and an SE if I can. I sometimes carry only a PE, and sometimes a CE.

I find the CE most useful in starting cuts. The serrated part binds and helps to start the but, and the PE part finishes it off. Best of both worlds ??? maybe ??? Some have found it handy to have both types of edge on the one knife and some have detested it, especially on the smaller ones. But each to their own. I prefer PE and SE separate (usually)

I feel if a combo edge blade has more belly and is hollowground,the blade can be short,it would still be a good cutter.

I don't dislike CE, but it was never my priority pick. My mind has changed ever since I tried to EDC a harpy SE for couple days. I found the SE can be very useful in some situation but less than 10% of the time that would happen. CE can be a great asset if the blade is long enough to host a long PE while still hold a serrated section, which can be very hand when you need it. If I can only have ONE single knife and no other tool allowed, it would be a long CE blade. I should start looking at some CE military's

Out of twelve :spyder: I have one SE (which just arrived this morning :) ) and two CE the rest are PE. If I were cutting rope on a regular basis I suspect the numbers of SE/CE may be higher. However, this isn't the case so my preference is most definitely PE followed by CE then SE.

I have three spydies, the two I use everyday for EDC are full SE blades. So far I haven't found anything wrong with the SE blades and most times they out cut a PE blade. Both my SE blade knives are variations on the Rescue (Rescue and Saver Salt) so they are pretty sheeple friendly as well.

I used to be a CE fan, but I realized that in most situations a PE blade suited me better. Now I have mostly PE knives. I also discovered that I like some knives in full SE. If I know a tough job is ahead I pack an SE blade. Or I carry the Wings as I get both in one knife. :D

I normally keep a CE in the rotation. I like them for tough cutting jobs when I need both edge types.

I wasn't too fond of it for a while, but I find for an EDC user at work, CE works very well for me.

I don't hate CE, I just don't see much need for one. I have mostly PE , and SE which I keep in the glove compartment should I need to cut a seat belt.

I love CE myself, attractive and versatile. It's like a sponge with a green abrassive side.

It's because when I'm "in the field", **** happens!

Either an unintended contact of rock or metal will compromise the cutting of a plain edge ... or time will be of the essence and require a ripping, slashing, get-the-job-done expediency to be applied ... whatever. Because it's not predictable, it means you need more than just a plain edge. Whether that translates to carrying multiple knives or not is up to each individual. I know that I go out more often with one CE folder than I do with two dedicated folders ... one PE, one SE.

Actually, when things are most uncertain (night surveys), I take a large CE folder (Goddard) and a medium SE fixed blade (Temperance carried for quick crossdraw) and a .380 auto (mostly for noise making; I'd hate to have to wound a mtn. lion with it).

My two cents...

#1: Plain edge, especially on smaller blades
#2: Combo edge is acceptable, though I'm starting to not like it for blades that are 3 in. and less.
#3: Spyderedge for special purpose knives. I'm becoming disillusioned with the SE since I have been caught with only a SE blade when I needed a PE.

I think the PE is the most versatile of the configurations … it always works for me. Then again, I’m more of a push-cutter (look I made a word :p ).

I've probably said this numerous times, but I'll say it again. One of the reasons that the Native III is my favorite knife is because of the ratio of it's combination edge. I think you get more than enough serrations for the "hard" work, but you also have enough of a plain edge to whittle, slice, etc. You wouldn't want to peel too much with it but it does give you enough for whittling. I think the ratio is 70/30 of SE/PE, if I recall correctly.
