I EDC VG10/G10 Caly3 for almost two years, I also own ZDP-189/CF version and recently bought Sage.
IMHO both knives are outstanding quality with great fit and finish. Both knives have 3" FFG leaf shape blade, great steel, finger choil, and good handle material, low riding wire clip, tip up carry. Sage is actually the first knife, where I like CF.
Primary differences: Sage has CF scales, which are more expensive, screw construction and liner lock. Caly3 is G10, which IMHO is very good scale material, rivets, and lockback. None of these differences is not significant for me. I have some preference to lockback, but can live with liner lock as well.

I cannot say which knife is better. I think it is matter of personal preferences.
My preferences with Caly3. Sage's blade a little too wide for me, I like slight negative angle of the edge on Caly3 and somehow it is more comfortable in my hand. Still I like Sage and there is a good chance it will became one of my EDCs.

Both are the best

I EDC both a CF Caly 3 and a Sage. They are currently my most favorite :spyder: s. I like the way the Sage fits my hands and the texture on the scales is a good thing. The positives for me on the Caly 3 is the ZDP blade and lock back mechanism. If I was in the market for either a G-10 Caly 3 or a Sage, I'd probably go with the Sage.

The Sage design is a synthesis of the Native and Caly3. It is wider than the Caly3 and has less hump than the Caly3.

It is narrower than the Native but has more hump than the Native. All three are 3.0" "leaf" shape blades.

On top of that, Sage has 2 thick bronze washers making the opening/closing action extra smooth
Open back design is a plus as well :p

I have and carry both. I like the Caly 3 as my warehouse work knife. It's a little smaller and more discreet for the times when I'm not supposed to be using a knife (they'd rather I use a box cutter but I hate those things), but it's a lot tougher than it looks.

The Sage has become my second fav Spydie right behind the Para-Military. It's actually a better EDC size and weight for my tastes. I'm really looking forward to all the variants of this model.

As far as performance, they're both PE Spydercos, they're my two favorite blade steels for EDC folders, they both feel great in hand when cutting... what can I say? Six of one and a half-dozen of the other as far as I'm concerned.

That's why I love the Sage so much. The Native and Caly3 are two great slicers and my previous Favs, but since I've received my Sage, it's never left my pocket :D

Great job Sal :spyder:

Tough Choice

Post by pedro navaja »

That is a tough choice; it is almost like which do you prefer, Monet or Manet?
Anyway I own the Sage and Caly 3's PE SE and CF.
It is like choosing btween 4 beautiful girlfriends and the best thing is to share time with each of them.
When I in the city working they are my EDC; in the outdoors they rest.

BOTH GOOD!
Both are about the same size/weight, strength(full liners), so you must go with your preference of Lockback or Linerlock, G10 or Carbon Fiber.

I like the Sage more because the handle and blade are wider, just feels better in hand than the narrow Caly. The texture of the CF is about perfect, grippy but doesn't bite you back. The liner lock is VERY EASY to operate. I have bad thumbs and I can flick the Sage open with my index finger. I feels just a little bigger/beefier than the Caly. In short, the Sage is the best design/executed knife I've seen in a long time.(circa Calypso Jr)

There are those who would like the Caly for just the opposite reasons.
You decide. :spyder:

Open back, yes. The standoff's are recessed into the liner which makes the knife more stable. Some standoffs are only surface and only the screws secure the knife. Also the stop is solid steel. I've cut hard with it and can't get the lock lug to move over. SOLID!

It's no contest for me. The totally southpaw friendly front lock of the Caly 3 wins hands down over the wrong handed liner lock of the Sage.

I have only had one liner lock but based on that, and my love of my Caly's, I would vote for CalyIII. I also think that the VG-10 is a little easier to get danerously sharp than the S30V is.

That being said you can't go wrong with either one.
