what is the best way to clean the stones?

The two favored methods are a damp sponge with one or another type of powdered cleanser and erasers. For the first, Barkeepers Friend seems to be the most highly regarded, but Comet works too.

I do this exact same thing. I found that it helps a ton to have new green scouring pads. Those white sharpening rods really shine!!
