Only in a true emergency! I would soon rather give one than lend one. You lend it, they mess it up, now I am pissed!! I give it they mess it up, oh well, it's theirs.

I usually have a few byrd knives laying around to give to people who don't have a knife. I don't lend mine out anymore after finding the knife laying open on a counter with the person I lent it to nowhere in sight.

My co-workers have learned (thank Og) the utility of carrying a knife, so they don't normally ask me to borrow mine, partly because they're scared of how sharp my knives are, I like them Scary-Sharp, even though it requires more maintenance, my co-workers would rather struggle with their less-than-optimally sharp knives than use one of my "razors"

Amusingly enough, the knife that "scares" my co-workers the most isn't a tactical one-hander, it's not even a Spydie, it's my simple No-8 Carbon-Steel Opinel, that knife is the sharpest knife of all my users, and that alone seems to be what truly scares my co-workers

Waved Delica? nope
Dodo (PE or SE)? nope
Manix? nope
Harpy/Tasman (SE or PE)? nope
SE Millie? a couple raised eyebrows, but no verbal remarks
Opinel #8? WARNING! SHARP AND SCARY!!

As far as loaners, I keep either a Native or a Byrd available, no biggie if they damage them, but there's also the unspoken understanding that if they break it they bought it, and they have to buy me a replacement

thankfully, none of my knives have been mistreated, my co-workers are responsible

Just toss a mora or two in your desk...

I have a couple Eriksson 556's, picked up for beaters and lenders. Figured if someone can kill it, it's only $15... without going to a cheap POS.

Oddly enough, they've always come back... must be the bright blue plastic handle :p

I recently volunteered my D4 to someone that I barely knew, but as they were walking away, I thought about similar threads, went after them and took care of the job myself!

I would only lend a :spyder: knife to someone I trust will use it properly. I generally carry a beater that would be a lendable knife. For some people I would just ask what do you want cut & do it for them.

Very well put. I agree.

Most of the folks I work with have been taught a little about knives and I've even gifted 3-4 knives to them. Some Alox SAK's, some Kershaw Scallions, but nothing yet Spyderco. I'm gonna have to change that. :)

One of the guys at work asked to borrow a Delica once and I asked "what for?" and he said "because I forgot my screwdriver and need one". I told him "no way dude, go get a screwdriver, don't ruin my knife it's for cutting."

So in essence I love to teach others about knives and yes I will let people I know borrow my knife if I'm with them. I only let good friends take my knife and take it out of my view. I let a good friend at work take one of mine up to a wiring closet to open some boxes and it was on the other side of the building and 4 floors up. He brought it back in perfect shape. I don't care if the edge gets dinged or scratched or if it needs sharpened. Knives are made to be used. Just don't stab wood objects with my knives for fun, or use it as a screwdriver, or a prybar.

I think if you can spread the Spyderco love or the appreciation for knives to others why not lend? Unless, of course, you know they are just going to freaking ruin the thing.

I do carry an Alox Victorinox Farmer for opening bottles, prying, can opener, wood saw, etc. I think I may start carrying around one of Brad's (Tricod) Rhino Pry thingies. I'm gonna have to pony up for one of those bad boys. :)

Generally not. On the flip side, the guys I would lend my knives to generally have their own. :)

That's sounds right to me guys. The person wanting to borrow my knife would have to have some experience with one. I wouldn't let anyone use my knives as prybars. If said person knows a thing or two about them they should already have their own. :D

If I liked and trusted a person enough to lend them one of my spydercos, I'd probably give one to them. The last one I did that with was my brother, who got a delica. A D3 FRN IIRC.

If I don't like them much, and don't trust them they wouldn't get any knife. Why would I give a sharp object to someone I don't trust?

I have given away cheaper knives as gifts to people when appropriate ( My cousins daughter has just became a cop). She wanted a Assisted opener so I gave her something appropriate ( leek?)

On the other hand if you're not family, or a friend you probably won't even know I collect knives. I'm generally private with my interests and hobbies. Joe

So true. Thats why a G-10 Robin lived in my work desk for the last eight months.

Whats that line about a knife being the most expensive, least effective screwdriver you can own? I wouldn't have lent it either Dave.

My friends know me and would probably ask me to do the task. People I don't know I offer to do the task. I usually fix up knifeless friends and employees with a knife. I begrudgingly loan my knife to my son, but usually after, "where the **** is yours". There are a few other exceptions but they are generally rare...Take Care...Ed

I've only lent out a spydie once. That was a couple of days ago when my cheif needed it to try and cut someone out of a car. So I guess that yes, I would lend out a spydie in an emergency or to someone I trusted.

Most of the people I know wouldn't try to use a knife as a screwdriver or a prybar, or at least smart enough to let me do the cutting.

Then again, the blades I usually let people use are either less than perfect (bought used on ebay) or lower end spydies (think Salsa or Salt). As for prying or screwdriver, I have actually used a first gen endura that I modified with a chisel tip for just projects (sometimes you do need a small and thin pry bar).

Under the right circumstances I would definitely do it. However, I've been burned on this one. I lent a Dodo to a coworker (manufacturing facility). Before I could stop him, the doofus tried to trim a 3/8th in. steel plate. He didn't notice that the sliver that was being rolled up was metal and not plastic. Took a chip out of the blade. At this past Blade show, Eric Glesser was kind enough to sharpen the knife for me (many thanks again, Eric). The chip is still there, but it's a (now smaller) sharp chip. That being said, I would still loan a knife (probably not a Dodo) under the right circumstances, but will most likely offer to hew whatever happens to be in need of severance as option #1.
