Funny, I don't consider a small linerlock to be an aspect of a quality knife. Linerlocks are notoriously tricky to do right, many come undone by tight gripping. In large formats it works great (Military), in smaller sizes it quickly becomes a medium or light duty lock (Walker). But do take note of the Urban, that one is under 3-inch and has G10 + S30V, should be out later this year. The leafstorm will also have some premium materials in a small package.

But I'm not quite sure what your complaint is; not enough knives under 3-inch or not enough knives 3-inch and under?

It's true that other companies offer more models, but Spyderco is not that big of a company; about 40 people that's it. I'm too much of a fan to give you a really objective response I guess, but I feel that Spyderco excells in the small 3-inch and under models. A lot of choices and with many different materials.

I gather you mean by 'our throat', the US market? If so, when has Spyderco 'shoved a bunch of UKPKs down anyone else's throat'? The UKPK has been designed to fullfill a need for a high-tech folding knife without a lock. To offer a solution to a problem. I don't think the UKPK was forced on foreigns markets to stimulate stricter laws on knife ownership.

Furthermore, Spyderco has always been on the forefronts of stimulating responsible knife use. To prevent stricter laws and attitudes towards knives, colors and the LBK concept has been introduced, as well as 'nice names' for the various models - 'Civilian' vs. 'Devil's Ripper'.

I actually see the UKPK as a way of actually preserving knife ownership in the future. Not that I like the way things are going, but times are changeing, and the UKPK is a means of dealing with that.

Actually, living in Japan where we're restricted to knives under 90mm long, Spyderco is my primary source of legal carry knives. Ya' just can't beat 'em. :spyder:

I think Spyderco makes some fantastic knives under 3". In fact I think my current collection of Spydies is numbering around the 80 mark :p . I'd hazard a guess that 90% of them have a blade length of under the 3" mark. With the exception of Mr BRK Native (aka red-headed stepchild Native) all the rest are absolutely flawless in design and function. All do their intended job and they do so very well. In fact most of them also look pretty **** sexy (I love my Kopas :D and mini Persian :D and Caly 3 :D etc.. etc....)

With upcoming Kopas, Slipits, Leafstorm, Sage and even more sprints of the LBKs I think we are spoilt for choice for sub 3" blades from Spyderco.

WIth respect to legalities. Here in Oz we aren't allowed to carry anything PERIOD ! I can still be found carrying at least 3-5 on me at any time though ;) :) However I do tend to stick with the smaller blades, and occasionally strap on the Millie just for fun !

3-5 Spydies at any given time? That is awesome Daniel! 2 is mandatory for me. 3 or 4 when I want more variety. I just keep them well hidden. :D

It is true that there are only two and they are both in my pocket "EDC". Let me explain. If they are going to be small, then they must be light so SS handles don't count. I really dislike finger choils, so models that are designed where I can't keep my hand on the handle also do not count. So we have the Delica 4 and the Lady Bug 3. Thats it. Two blades under 3" in the current line-up. One more in the Delica family with a handle around 3+" and a blade of about 2-1/2" would go a long way towards keeping many people very happy. Keep it light, thin, and full screw construction please.

The fact that there are only two that YOU like does not mean there are only two in the lineup. There are other people out there with different tastes, and there are a few in the lineup for them, too.

Wouter, I believe what he meant by not ramming a bunch of UKPKs down our throats was that Spyderco is still making a wide range of knives for a wide range of laws, not just retreating to making small, non-locking, politically correct folders. I'm glad they make the Military and Police models as well as the UKPK. I carry at least one Millie and a UKPK every day, and I'd carry a Police if I couldn't get arrested for it.
I don't believe in safe queens, only in pre-need replacements.

That could be possible. I too am glad for the wide range of knives that are found in the current line-up and I hope they continue to offer this diversity.

I like most of mine big, but the Caly 3 is just about as perfect as it comes for my sheeple back-up. I have hated coils and thought of them as wasted space, still think so on bigger blades, but it works on the Caly. My cutting tests have shown the Caly to out perform most of my 3.5 inch knives and have never felt under-knifed in restricted jurisdictions. Now, can I have one in Jigged bone? :p

Spyderco has a pretty darn good selection in LBK's IMHO......Welcome to the Forum :)
