Still, it IS fairly easy to find a Spyderco dealer in a country, European or otherwise, where there are no restrictions on the sale of balisongs and inquire as to whether they are planning to order, or would be willing to accept an order for, a Smallfly trainer.

Does anyone know why even the trainers would be illegal (in the Netherlands)?

BTW, I believe the smallfly was designed to be legal in more countries (e.g. NL). The blade length was shortend.

Far as i can remember, the Smallfly isn't illegal in the Netherlands. At least not yet anyway.

A Smallfly Trainer would be great. I would flip all day with no worries. Why would they be restricted? Is Spyderco just not taking any chances with the new 'flys?

im thinking they are illegal because you can sharpen them, spyderco pobably doesnt want thier name on it when some kid gets busted with it on the streets.

I don't believe that is the exact point. The trainers will be quite hard to sharpen, because they are made of steel which hasn't been tempered and also it has holes in the blades.

Even a sharpened pencil can inflict harm, but I doubt anyone will buy a $200 trainer in order to make it into a functional balisong.

It's really not about logic. it's about the funny knife laws that some politicians have put in due to the rising fear of knives among the general public. Spyderco wants to be on the safe side is all.
